that I saw earlier this summer at a major chain bookstore/coffeehouse. It was about a series of shark incidents along the Jersey Shore earlier in the last (20th) century. I decided to purchase it, and of course, it was not where I last saw it... Is anyone familiar with this book?

Yep - saw it the other day and had a browse through it. The bookshop is only a block from my office - I'll have another look during my lunchbreak and get the details for you.

Is it "Close to Shore: A True Story of Terror in an Age of Innocence"

I found it at Amazon

Thanks! I wasn't sure where to begin a search, but "New Jersey Shark" did work pretty well. Why didn't I think of that first?

I think that was it, but I will have to go visit it in person to be sure. I see there was another book that came up on that topic as well by a Dr. Fernicola...

When I saw the book in the store, it reminded me of those times when the lifeguards would blow their whistles and motion for everyone to get out of the water...

I had never heard of these books, or of the incidents. I'm going to have to check them out. Being in Jersey I love reading books with a local connection. While reading "Last Dive" it was interesting not only having been to many of the places thay talked about but having actualy met some of the people from the book.

I've read the book and found it fascinating, especially since I grew up in that area. It's hard to imagine shark attacks in those little creeks!
