Didn't use a kickboard at all. :) You can do it on the surface if you want, or drop down underneath the water too.
I have now found that if I drop down for a few moments I almost immediately go into trim whether I'm on scuba or not (or even if I'm not skin-diving). Just force of habit. You can do all the basic kicks like that.

It's also interesting to play with your breathing in the pool (again, not on scuba). Float on the surface, take a huge breath, and expel it all forcefully. Watch how quickly you sink. Now vary how much you expel. Just some neat stuff to play with. :)

When you say that you have issues skin diving 75' I'll assume you mean horizontally. Tell me exactly what you're doing when you do this. If you have good technique and you're slow and relaxed, 75ft should be relatively easy. Upside-down dolphin kick is my favorite for going places while on mask/fins/snorkel...(seriously) It's very relaxing. :D
If you're talking about underwater swimming 75' rather than while in skin-diving gear, let me know. I'll link you to my post and video for underwater swimming.

By the way are you and PerroneFord from the same cube? :D

Our ships are convening on the homeworld this weekend. New assimilation techniques will be devised and reviewed.

what really helped me was this piece of advice i got from someone much wiser: once your legs are extended and your fins are pivoted out, instead of trying to "reverse" the frog kick, simply bring your heels to your butt. it was night and day, at least for me.

I'm talking about swiming across the length of the pool with swimming trunks and goggles lol. I hope that I'm practicing propery for the GUE prerequisites. From what I think I understand, no other devices are allowed exept thermal protection where appropriate, and goggles for the 50' breath hold swim. I think it's horizontal because if it's vertical, straight down to 50' deep then I'll be in trouble... I never thought I could swim more than 3' on a breath hold, but now I've gone to 75' and now my next goal will be 150'!

I didn't know how to swim a couple months before I started my Padi OW cert. I had to go to the pool every day to teach myself. So I'm a weak swimmer by many standards and I have to work up to GUE minimums. What's funny is I was in the Navy for 13 years before I learned how to swim!

Whale Whisperer: It's a horizontal swim, no pushing off. Personally, I hated that part. But I'm not very bright and never went and practiced. :)

If you can do 75' with no pushing off, then you should be fine :)

If you can manage to do a frog kick real slow so that you don't move forward, you will get the idea of how to achieve the loading portion of the back kick.

After a few tries in the pool, I can do the back kick on the surface! I did about 3 laps which is about 150 yds. halfway through I started to get craps so I relaxed my movements. I first had trouble but was able to manage after some patience with a kick board, next time I'll loose the board and just use a mask.

Once I got a feel for the stroke, going backwards wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I just don't know how that movement can be translated with a full kit. I guess I'll find out soon after a few more pool sessions.

Got alot of strange looks while doing backward laps though lol.
Thanks for the help everyone!

Woo! Craps can be scary, especially in a public pool! I have always been told that pushing too hard can cause internal damage, so relaxing your movements was probably a good call. If we're gonna be doing any diving together, it might be best to get that kind of stuff out of the way prior to the trip. :D

It was nice to meet you, by the way.

:rofl3: I meant Cramps geez! I can't believe I made that mistake ha ha ha ha ha!

Yeah I'll make sure I'll take care of that before we dive lol!
