Damn, that eel is a creepy lookin bastard

Lovely photos! But it is so funny to see people spending time taking pictures of metridiums . . . here in Seattle, we're trying to avoid taking pictures of them, while we photograph the things that live among them!

We only have them on offshore wrecks or deep reefs here. Scott and Margaret have thousands of dives between them and had never seen one. Down here, we try to avoid taking pictures of garibaldis and Spanish Shawls. ;)

Wolfeel on the Fog Wreck

In SoCal you will find them on deep wrecks such as the Moody, UB88 or the many deeper wrecks beyond recreational diving. The Huntington Flats area between San Pedro and Huntington Beach is remarkable in that there are several wrecks and rockpiles in less than 100 feet that contain wolfeels, metridiums, rockfish and algae not found near shore. One of my favorite dives to make is one with metridiums, wolfeels and no garibaldis in sight and these sites are as close as a half mile from shore. The Jenny Lynne wreck is covered with metridiums and is within swimming distance of the point at Marineland.

We have a lot of wolf eels up here. Once Jon and I were diving Arena Rock and came across one on a hole similar to some of those great shots you have, but the head was about 8 to 10 inches tall from bottom of jaw to top of head.
They are anywhere from 40 foot down on rocky reefs and mostly offshore reefs up here.

I had a wolfy come straight out of a crevice right at me once and at the last second made a hard left turn and took off along the wall out of sight. It was probably a 9 footer tip to tail.
It seemed to care less about me and was annoyed at something else. I looked into the crevice it came out of and saw a huge giant pacific octopus with 4" arms sliding back into it's hole.
They must have had an argument about something? :dontknow:
