I can only assume Gaz that you don't know what I've been through here.

I thought that was with foreiners at BYC not the locals if you have had problems with the locals I was not aware of it.

Ah, this thread brings back good memories. Like RedGym. I spent a wonderful week last August at Turneffe. We also posted a trip report, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. My wife is a non-diver and enjoyed her stay; my daughter and I dive and as the surface intervals are all back at the resort (live-aboard on land is correct!), we still spent lots of time with her and she never felt lonely. The resort features luxury bath amenities and perhaps the most comfortable beds / linens in the caribbean. The staff not only greets the guests on arrival but all come to the dock upon departure, leaving my wife in sentimental tears (especially as the island's dogs came for a last hug as well).

Diving the Blue Hole gave me a hunger for spending more than 6 minutes or so in a cavern; my daughter and I just returned from Puerto Aventuras, MX after passing our Cavern Certification (NACD).

We also experienced less than ideal visibility during our stay at TIR, but this will certainly not deter us from returning within a year or two! I wish I could clone TIR and find a similar resort at each dive destination we'd like to visit.:D

But Ralph is a gringo, unless Canadians don't qualify as gringos! I have found the people in and around Placencia to be very welcoming.

thanks for the informative trip report.... but where are you pictures???? :D

we have considered going there, but they are priced in line with the liveaboards, so we haven't made a decision either way yet. I would really like to see some photos of resort, boats, etc. and I am sure others feel the same, considering the price.

Here are some pictures I took when we were at TIR (then Turneffe Island Lodge) two years ago:

I'm not a very good photographer so I use one of those idiot proof point and shoots, but this should give you some idea of what the place and boats look like.

Great pictures, Downing. I'm out there. :D

Being an old bugger, I still shoot film... and have yet to take it in to be developed!

Comparing a liveaboard to TIR is tough. Certainly, there are going to be considerably more dives from the liveaboard. The dive schedule at TIR left me a bit wanting. I would happily do 3 or more a day, everyday. Mind you, it was chilly when we were there.

On the other hand, as nice as the cabins are on the Aggressor, they don't compare with the accomodation here. But then I wouldn't expect anyone to think that they would be equivalent.

I think it would boil down to the amount of diving you want to do.... dollar for dollar, the "cost per dive" will be much lower on a liveaboard. You can't really go wrong with either IMHO.

I've done lots of liveaboards, albeit not in Belize. I think I'd prefer the TIR experience to a liveaboard any day.

When I go on a dive trip I always book a liveaboard you just cant beat it for getting to remote divesites ease of diving and since your actually living on the dive boat diving is easy and plentiful.

Also many a time on a liveabord we have been able to stay in a certain area we liked and dived it some more so its more flexible too.

To be stuck in one place to me is restricting when spending so much money and in this case I beleive the liveaboard offers better value for Money and you will be able to spend more time diving Lighhouse Reef on the liveabord which I personally consider better diving overall that Turneffe.
