Back from a great week in Statia, staying at the old gin house and diving with Golden Rock Divers. Found them in a previous post and decided to go check them out.I'll be brief. Very competent dive op. Glen,Matt and Michelle had met all of our needs with professionalism. Diving was very good. They let us dive to our own comfort level and limits. Wind and group limitations kept us from some sites, but the reefs are healthy and there is a wide variety of aquatic life. The island has a huge history and was very pleasant to stay on. They were having elections that week and the island was quite lively. The lodging was fine and the restaurant options are limited but very good quality. There are no typical tourist attractions, but to me that is part of what makes this place special. I recommend this trip to all who are looking for something different than the typical destinations. Excellent snorkeling along the old waterfront for non divers. One of the divers actually found a blue bead on one of our dives. Very laid-back trip. Go! Sea!

This is for you glen.

Hi David,

I enjoyed your films and although I did not participate in that specific dive to Charles Brown it does bring back memories. I look forward to seeing the rest of the films you made, including the night dive at Chien Tong and the dive at Blue Bead Hole (I am the one who found the bead :D

Did you fly over using Winair? If so, can you say anything about luggage issues? From previous posts it seems like Winair is a bit troublesome.

Yes, I flew Winair (which I believe is the only airline flying to Statia). You are allowed one piece of luggage included in the ticket price. Extra check-in bags etc. would cost you USD 20 a piece. I did not find the airline any trouble at all.
