There are some brutal people on these message boards Eddy. Don't let them get to you.

Once again, thanks for the Coz report. That's what this thread was all about - right?

When I said "I ran out of air" I should've said "the computer said I didn't have air".
I knew there is a reserve when the indicator reaches 0.
Dude, first rule of holes: When you in one stop digging!!!

You still couldn't have had enough air to finish your deco stop..

BTW very nice trip report..

Yeah, I guess keep digging ... I'll stop now.

I am not being brutal, I am being honest and trying to help him understand how badly he could have been hurt....

Yes, nice trip report, but it's hard for me to sit by and watch someone put themsleves in such situations and not understand how serious it could have been. THEN to try to justify it by saying deco diving is "ok" just further illustrates ewong's lack of understanding of the real issues here. If you read the entire article(s), you'll see what I mean here.

Eddy has said that he doesn't dive like that all the time, and I'm glad to hear it. However, his lackadaisical attitude and subsequent comments made by him (which only prove my point more) is what concerns me.

The reason I became an instructor is to educate...not for the glory, recognition, or whatever other reasons become instructors. This means encouragement and praise, but it also means pointing out things that the diver did "wrong" whether it's what they want to hear or not...especially a certified diver who SHOULD know better. Too many instructors don't truly care and just churn students through.

I remember being chewed out by an instructor for breaking the dive plan by 10 feet and not adjusting my plan accordingly (I was not diving a computer at the time). I got sat out for the second dive because I couldn't give him an answer to satisfy him. He said, when you can tell me how the plan should have been adjusted and how the second dive should be adjusted as a result, you can get back in the water. At the time, I thought it was harsh and an over reaction...but I learned from it and didn't go back in the water again without KNOWING my plan and having a contingency plan. If I still screwed up, I learned how to plan accordingly for the next dive.

Furthermore, one of the objectives of these dive community boards, along with entertainment and enjoyment is to educate and learn from others, good or bad.

There is no room in diving for arrogance or complacency...your life could be at stake.

So, sorry if you think I'm being brutal, but I'm just telling it like it is and responded to his actions and his attitude regarding same.

Again, good luck, thanks for the report...I'm sure others will learn from it.

I'm done with this topic. I tried to help...take it or leave it.

Good idea. You keep saying that you understand then add something that makes it clear you don't.

If your gauge says "0" then you have "0". If your computer says you have "0" then you have "0". Running out of air is something you do to someone else. If S had 1000 and you had "0" then when you started to share she had 400 and you had taken over 600(or thereabouts) of her gas supply. Did she have a deco obligation?

No, she wasn't. She was on shallower profile.

Thanks for the report Eddy!

We're going back to SCC the week of October 15th. Your report got me jazzed up for my trip. I'm just debating now whether I should buy a housing for my Canon 20D. It's only another $2,500 (with strobe).

Is Canon 20D an SLR? Checkout http://uwphoto.com. They specialize in uw photography.

Look, I already admitted this is not the way to do things. I never said I know everything either. I'm just trying to understand what's involved in a deco dive and not treat it as just something forbidden. Now that I know that I've done something wrong, I would like to be prepared/trained for next time.

No one here told you that going into deco was forbidden, either. What is at best unwise is to blunder into deco accidentally and then delay doing anything about it until you no longer have sufficient air to complete the deco stop recommended by your computer. If faced with the decision between drowning and risking a DCS hit, of course one takes the hit, but where the royal screwup happens is allowing things to get to the point where such a decision is necessary.
