Got a a great day of diving at Madison Quarry with Dive Sports Quarry Days.
Conditions:
Air temps were cool in the morning, but the sun came out after lunch and
air temps warmed up to 90f with warm sunlight.
Water temps were 82-84f on the surface and 75f on the bottom. The
thermocline seems to be at around 30 feet, but was a gentle one
as the bottom temps have warmed up nicely.
Vis was about 10 feet average with a max of about 15 feet. The thermocline
hit the bottom of the quarry in a few spots that were only 30-35ft deep,
which made the view a little 'fuzzy' in spots.
Vis was really bad in a vew spots on our second dive. We must have just
followed a class of the openwater students to the submerged objects
in the quarry because as we reached them, we ran into a cloud of silt.
It was reduced to 2 ro 3 feet, or less. As soon as you got away from
the submerged object it cleared up though..... This was obvisosley caused
by people (most likely open water students) who weren't weighted or trimmed
correctly and had stired up the silt on the bottom.
Who?
There were a lot of divers there, but it wasn't "overcrowded" by any means.
I counted about 60 cars there. Parking along the waters edge filled
up by 8am. They were open when we got there about 8am, but they
hadn't bothered to unlock the front door yet, so you had to go in/out
the side door of ths shop. (mentioning this as others have posted on
here about them being late opening here in the past weeks).
From Scubaboard were:
Me, Corigan, FloDiver, RdHarbis1. Might have been a few more that
were "Incognito".
Hats off to Corigan, who left Atlanta at 4 or 5am to drive over. He must
have REALLY wanted to dive today!!!!
Also good to see one of my room-mates from college who's returned to diving.
However the bad thing is that he's "Re-possesed" the tanks I borrowed
from him several years ago. Heh.
Lunch:
You really want this much detail in a the trip report? heh.
Other Stuff:
Well, they still haven't fixed the broken dock area. It's been broken
now for about 2 months. I asked the manager why they hadn't fixed
it and when it would be fixed, since this was their "busy season" and
got excuses that "they hadn't had time". Sounded more like "laziness"
to me though since the places is pretty empty M-F when they are
open.
But luckily they didn't hassle people about driving to the parking area
of the quarry withouth their "buddy".
Summary:
When do we get to go again?
