Dive Operator: Jack’s Diving Locker
Location: Kona
Time: October 7 & 8, 2009
Water Temp: 78

I apologize for the delay in getting this trip report posted. I dove with Jack’s Diving Locker in October.

I really enjoyed my time with Jack’s. They were a great operation. I spent a total of two days with them which included doing the Manta Ray night dive. I really enjoyed their Boat Captain, he was very customer oriented and provided us with a “guided tour” in between dives. It was great.

Justin was the DM that I dove with on every dive. He was great, he pointed out the fantastic critters and was very customer oriented.

The diving locations were great. I was especially excited as it was my first encounter with sharks.

I dove with Jack’s Diving Locker for a total of 5 dives over two days.

Dive 1 – Black Castle (Bandit Angel Fish)
Dive 2 – Driftwood
Dive 3 – Henry’s Cave (3 White Tip Sharks)
Dive 4 – Garden Eel Cove
Dive 5 – Garden Eel Cove (Manta Ray Night Dive)

Highlights:

**- The visibility was pretty darn good at 95 feet every dive.
**- They took care of everything from a gear stand point. I didn’t lift a finger.
**- Food/snacks were provided after each dive.
**- In Henry’s Cave we encounter 3 White Tip Sharks. It was fantastic.
**- No cattle boat here, I dove with just the DM on one dive and two additional
customer’s on the others.
**- The Manta Ray Night dive was super! We saw probably 10-15 Manta Ray’s?

Negative:

**- The current was terrible at the Manta Ray night dive. My knees suffered! Not Jack’s fault, just a negative part of the trip.

Recommendation:

I would book with Jack’s again if I was headed back to Kona. I felt as though I was the only person with them and sometimes I was. Justin was a great DM and the other employees that I interacted with at their shop were especially friendly.

The variation in dives was very good. I especially enjoyed the boat trip as mentioned above. It really tied the entire trip together.

I'm not sure how to embed video but here's the shark from Henry's cave:

Black Castle is a cool dive, deep and isolated. One time had current suddenly come up while descending, almost to the bottom. Had to shelter behind the darn rock to keep from being blown away. Ascending we were like flags fluttering from the anchor line..........great fun. Poor Kawika was mortified about diving in those conditions, I assured him it was all good!
