Before our trip, I posted here asking for advice for the honeymoon I was planning. Some people didn't think my new wife and I could have our 8 days, 9 nights honeymoon in Roatan for $1500. Well, let's see how we did. :)

We dove with Coconut Tree Divers and stayed at Coconut Tree Cabins. They are both centrally located in West End which makes getting around very convenient. My wife and I both really enjoyed doing our open water certification with Natasha at Coconut Tree. She was very fun, professional, and patient. We did the knowledge portion online through PADI's website ahead of time which meant we only had to do the water portion when we arrived (which took about two days to complete). I definitely recommend doing the knowledge portion online ahead of time. Not only does it save time, but it also helps to alleviate some fears/questions that we had about diving (this was our first time).

After we were certified, we took a day off because we were kinda tired. We went grocery shopping at Plaza Mar near Coxen Hole because our cabin had a small kitchen (refrigerator, stove/oven, microwave, sink, cupboards with plates and stuff) and we could save time and money by making our own breakfast and lunch sometimes. This also let us splurge unreservedly on dinner.

The rest of the time we were on the island, we tended to spend the mornings relaxing or doing random trips (to West Bay, Coxen Hole, Sandy Bay, etc.) and then one dive in the afternoon. We could have done more dives but my wife just wanted to do one a day. Also, it was our honeymoon so we were "busy" doing other things ;):D. We had some amazing dives (loved the swim throughs at Hole in the Wall, for example) and usually had a dive master or dive master in training all to ourselves (often had more than one).

So how much did it cost? Here it is:
9 nights at Coconut Tree Cabins (king size bed, A/C, private bath, small kitchen, TV): $360
OW certification at Coconut Tree Divers (takes 2 days, includes 4 dives): $230 x 2 ppl = $460
5 days of fun dives (1 dive/day) at CTD: $25 x 5 x 2 ppl = $250
Total: $1070

This leaves $430 for food, transportation, etc. I don't have exact numbers for how much we spent but it is certainly less than $430. We probably spent around $50 at Plaza Mar and another $200 on dining out. Of course, you could burn through $430 if you wanted to (some other divers dropped $80 on one dinner). Some of our favorite places to eat include the rotisserie chicken place near Rudy's, Sundowners, Cindy's Place, Blue Channel (has free wifi), Anthony's Chicken, and the Argentinian Grill.

Conclusion: You can stay and dive for a week at West End for a honeymoon for $1500 (two people). I don't care what other people on this board think. We did it. You could even do more diving if you want. I think we spent around $1300, maybe a little more or less.

Note: This trip report does not include the costs of getting to or from the island (we flew to San Pedro Sula, took a bus to La Ceiba, and then the ferry to Roatan) or the cost of the PADI online course ($120 per person I think).

Thanks for posting. Hope you enjoyed your honeymoon on the Island. There are very inexpensive but still very comfortable accommodations in the West End. Cannot go wrong at $25 for fun dives either. Great places to eat at a reasonable price as well as you mentioned a few. Is the Noodle Shack still there. Something about the vibe at the West End and of course the diving the keeps me coming back.

Thanks for the report. Your financial breakdown will be helpful for others.

Just realize on this board, that most of us want to get in more than one dive a day. By skipping the two morning dives for 2, you saved $100 a day that I think we wouldn't do in putting together numbers.

That said, I did a week at Coconut Tree in May staying in the Cabins and diving with them, and found the rate for 3 dives plus accomodations to be $120 a day. Split two ways you are down to $100 a day. Still a very affordable way to dive where in most places you would pay $100 just for a 2 tank morning dive.

I totally agree with Natasha. Great person. Even though I wasn't taking a class with her, she made sure that I was being taken care of. Its those little things that have me coming back.

I had not read any posts where anyone suggested your trip could not be done in your price range, I think the confusion comes from, as mentioned, most doing two or three dives a day and not just one and lso you mentioned you were looking for mid-range accommodations. CCT Cabins are fine but certainly some of the lower budget places and not ht many would think of when planning honeymoon stuff. Glad it worked out well

Darn, I was expecting more information about the activities on your surface interval... tee hee! Congratulations on the wedding.

Dive trips do not have to break the bank to be fun. Back in 2001 I did a 10 week diving/backpacking trip circling the Pacific (LA-Taiwan-Hong Kong-Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur-Darwin-Cairns-Sydney-Auckland-Cook Islands-Fiji-Tahiti-LA) for a TOTAL cost (including all airfare, diving, food, accommodations, gifts, etc) of $4,500. Although the US$ is much weaker today (grrr), trips do not have to cost an arm and a leg (I came back with all four appendages).
