Just got back from a weeklong stay at AKR. This was our 2nd trip to Roatan but our 1st to AKR and we could not be happier.

Arrived at airport and meet by Gregory who gathered up our bags and we were off to the resort. Check in was efficient and very easy which finished up just in time for a late lunch. At check in they told us we would not need any money and we put it in the safety deposit box at the front desk. We were told to just charge things to the room. That is true for drinks, snacks and things in the shops, but we had no money for tips. There was a band in the bar that had a tip jar and you could buy a CD. I would have like to given them a little something. Also, on the key one night there were fire dancers and at the end they “passed the hat”. I bet they didn’t get $5! No one had money. So you might want to keep out a few bucks for tipping non-hotel people.

We stayed on the hill and were very happy with the room. Nothing fancy but it had “cold” a/c, comfortable beds and a small frig. The water pressure was great and plenty of hot water. Like some people had mentioned in previous reports there are lots of stairs on the hills but it was no problem for us.

My wife and I were very happy with the meals, which were always served with a smile by either Perry or Larry. Breakfast always had fruit cereal and muffins etc…. In addition there was about dozen hot choices off the menu. Lunch was either a soup or salad and your choice of two hot lunches and a dessert. Dinner was the same setup as lunch just with different choices (all the soups were wonderful).

The diving operation was very well run. Each person has a locker for storage and is assigned a boat for the entire week. You are responsible for getting equipment to and from boat but they will set it up for you. Frank (dive master) and Kenly (captain) were great and would help in any way they could. Most of the sites were just a few minutes away, which was always nice.

Probably the best part of the trip was the people we meet. Our whole boat just clicked! Hopefully in 2010 we can all do another dive trip together.

The only bad part of the trip was the “sand flies” at least for my wife. The first time in Roatan we stayed on the South side in May and did not experience them at all. Don’t let this stop you just go prepared with (Deet 40% or you can buy cactus juice or some other type of repellent). There seemed to be more sand flies on the key than over on the hill.

All in all this was fantastic trip and we will be back in a couple years when our son is old enough for the dolphin camp.

Hope this helps.

What critters did you see while diving?

Great report, I love diving with Frank.

I apologize for not putting more emphasis on the dive side of the trip. Some of the jewels that we found were: large eye toadfish, spotted scorpionfish, seahorses (1 was pregnant), web burrfish, turtles, octopus, a field of garden eels, sand shark, spotted drum, reef sharks (on shark dive). Not to mention the numerous reef fish that you see on many dives ie…. Herds of squirrelfish, trumpets, angels (all varieties, foureyes, blue tangs, surgeonfish, lobsters, eels, trunkfish etc…

As I was researching this subject both on SB and Trip Advisor most reviews seem to suggest the opposite - there are more sandflies on the hill than there are on the key due to the ocean breeze. Was your experience different? Thanks.

the whole island has sand fleas. Your best bet to prevent bites is to spray on bugspray of your choice as soon as you get out of the water, then occasionally during the time your are out. Sand fleas-noseeums love salty skin and love to hang out in the sand or around wooden walkways or hammocks or ..... Some weeks they are especially bad, due to rain or no wind or whatever. Some weeks people don't use any spray and don't get a single bite. There is no way to predict where or when they will be bad. Just go, use the spray often, and don't worry about it. Roatan is fantastic!!!:D:D:D

They were attracted to my wife more than me. Some got us on the hill some got us on the key. Some days were worse than others. I don't know the rhyme or reasons but Roatan is great! Just go prepared by bringing your spray and cactus juice.
