Well..What can I say... WOW!!! Great Trip!

Flew non-stop Detroit to Coz. 3.5hr flight. Almost got tricked into the timeshare pitch before we got to the curb. Clean cut polo shirted guy asks very officially to check your itenarary to ensure that you have transportation to your hotel, walk away with your paper work to their kiosk, next as they make small talk they offer a map of the island.... didn't hear the rest, realized I was getting a sales pitch

Stayed at Casa del Mar. All furniture in the room was new, everything operational. Matress was a little too firm the first 3 nights, then I got used to it. (back ache could have been shlepping that dive gear)

Sunday, spent the day with my non-diving wife at Nachi Cocum, the Casa del Mar beach. Currently only open to hotel guests. Did a 4hr imitation of the Corona comercial... cool....

Dove with Del Mar Aquatics Monday through Thursday, 8 dives total. Divemaster was Jesus. Largest boat was with 12 divers. Most days there were between 6 & 8 divers. Deepest dive 88 ft. Longest bottom time 51 minutes, total bottom time slightly over 5hrs. Wildlife observed:
  • Eagle Rays
  • Baracuda- including one with a head as big as my thigh, he was peaking out of the Planacar wall at 90 ft.
  • Nurse shark
  • Splendid toadfish
  • Green Sea Turtle
  • Grunts -- all kinds
  • Grouper-- including a 200 pounder
  • Parrot fish
  • Hogfish
  • Sargeant Major
  • Anglefish--Queen, Gray, & French
  • Bar Jack
  • Horse-eyed Jack
  • Palometa
  • Sand Tilefish
  • Puffer
  • Trunkfish
  • Stonefish
  • Spiny Lobster- one 4 pounder

These were my first open water dives in 10 years, so I was excited. But, actually the first two dives were an exercise in Alarm Management. Seems my Computer (Oceanic Pro Plus 2) End Air Pressure setting (which I set at 500 psi) alarms at 10 and 5 minutes until reaching the setpoint based on air usage rate. So there is a period there where during exertion you could get the 5 min alarm, stop kicking and then get the 10 minute alarm due to decrease air usage rate. The reduce depth and do it all again. Additonally my dive watch (Citizen Aqualand) only allows a 30ft/min ascent rate above 30ft depth. It took a while to get used to all the beeping, understand it and control it.

The Food! In a word, Fantastic. Breakfast at Casa del Mar (complementary with our stay) was great Following the Christi List we ate at:
  • Casa Dennis (twice)
  • El Morro
  • La Mission
  • Guidos

Friday we took the Ferry to Playa del Carmen and went to Xel-Ha for some snorkeling. The wind was 20kts out of the East so the inlet silted up terribly. That meant there was more time for margaritas... Good time anyway. Very interesting that there appeared very little storm damage only 12 miles from Coz.

Visted Christi, one evening, just to say high and bought a T-shirt.

I'd go again, in a heartbeat

Glad to hear that you had a good time! 10 days until we arrive on the island, it is good to hear stories from folks coming back. Thanks for sharing!

subnavigator,
thank you for your trip report.
glad to hear that casa del mar is operational.
did you notice the condition of the little "beach" area across the bridge next to del mar aquatics?
sounds like y'all had a very nice holiday.
regards,

The beach side of the road is no longer a beach. Sand washed away leaving bare rock and coral. Several people still were able to do shore dive/snorkel access through the ruins of the dive shop. Work crews are starting the slow process of restoring the outer sea wall. Dive shop is set up across the street under the hotel pool deck. Del Mar Aquatics is sharing the Atlantis Submarine pier across from the hotel steps. I had to rinse my gear at the hotel pool. Some people took their gear to thier showers.
Everybody was using the balcony for drying dive gear. The one drawback on the current situation is divers walking through the palapa restaraunt at all times of day carrying or wearing their gear, wet and dry...

Nachi Cocum is open to hotel guests? Are they running a shuttle from the hotel? Do they have all the facilities open? I liked that beach club.

We were supposed to stay at Casa del Mar in Dec and again in Feb. Both times we were cancelled when they pushed back their reopening. I wanted to try again for either end of May or December. After I read this today on Cozumel Insider, I'm wondering if these are just unfortunate mistakes, or if it was complete disregard.

"The reconstruction of the beach area of Casa Del Mar has resulted in alteration of the coast line in order to widen the beach area. There is no natural sandy beach in that location, just a limestone plate which was filled with sand, and which will be again as soon as the retaining walls are constructed. Unfortunately, during a concrete pour last Thursday there was a spill into the sea. Concrete is highly alkaline and disperses rapidly forming a particulate cloud which settles on forming coral and smothers it. In order to avoid the problem a floating textile mesh is utilized during a pour to trap the particulate and minimize damage. This is required by federally directed repairs, but not the works of a private hotel. The manager of this hotel, Normando Cruz Aguayo Arceo, has been involved in other cases of environmental abuse, notably the filling of 750 square meters of mangrove at the Nachi Cocum beach club located in the heart of the National Marine Park. Questions put to environmental protection agencies such as Profepa and Semarnat generated the answer that these abuses must be tolerated because the facilities represent a source of employment." http://cozumelinsider.com/News

Shuttle is being run from the hotel. There was some damage at the beach club, but the pool, restaraunt and restrooms are open. The pier appears operational, but the diveboats are going to the Occidental Resort pier 300yds further south on the beach.

With regard to the article, the concrete spill was probably an accident, I saw them cleaning it up. With regard to the mangrove, all I saw was a parking lot and a road. the Occidental Resort covers about a square quarter mile of what probable consisted of some mangrove swamp and is equally in the heart of the National Marine Park. Heck the highway in that area has mangrove on both sides. I doubt there was a natural roadbed pre-existing......

Great trip report!

Glad you had a great time in Cozumel. It was so nice to meet you both!
