The question of inert gases and their physiological effects is a good one. NASA has an interest in this since, some day, people will travel to Mars. There the atmosphere is a mixture of carbon dioxide, and some nitrogen and argon. The carbon dioxide will be converted to oxygen and mixed with the separated nitrogen and argon. What will happen to individuals when they breathe these gases for months? Most likely nothing adverse. Some degree of testing will be conduced with human volunteers. Previous work with animals has not given any indication that problems can be expected.
This is with gas pressures totaling about one atmosphere. If tens of atmospheres of pressure are used, physiological effects do appear.
