Hi,

I expected this to be a popular topic, yet, I could not find anything.

Can an instructor train a OC trimix diver while using a CCR? (the purpose is to save several hundreds of dollars worth of helium)
If not, why?

Thank you,
Looka

I am not an instructor and even though I have seen instructors on CCR teaching OC students, I do not agree with the practice.

Thanks for your response. Why do you not agree?

I like the team to be on the same equipment.

When I did my OC Trimix course my instructor was on CCR.

I *think* that TDI allows it, provided the instructor is an instructor on the Unit they are diving and a couple of other stipulations that I don't remember at the moment. When I did my advanced trimix, I asked why my instructor wasn't on ccr, and the answer was he hadn't met one of those qualifications (not enough hours, students certified, something).

I don't see a problem with the instructor being on CCR. It's nice to have a unified team, but it might be a more valuable experience to learn about mixed team diving. Besides, at that level it's not like you really NEED the instructor to demonstrate a valve drill...

Yes for IANTD but I don't think this is good practice for another reason: the student looks at the instructor as a demonstrator......how the instructor sets up his/her gear, manages him/herself in the water ......

I agree with the concept, especially for recreational and beginning tech classes. But shouldn't the student already have that sorted out by a trimix class?

If the student had everything sorted out, there wouldn't be much use for the class, would there?

I also think it's a matter of instructor safety. If something goes wrong on the CCR, when the student is unfamiliar with CCRs, it could pose a threat to the instructor. That would put the student in danger as well, would it not?

You would assume that the instructor should be able to be self reliant at that level of diving. At least I would never think that a student would be able to help me even at recreational levels.
