Other tips for using a lighter:

burn off any unravelling thread from neoprene (or other,) pieces. My USIA drysuit occasionally unravells at the zipper where the strings are exposed. Not a big deal, just not something I want stuck in the zipper. Just hold the string and burn through it- done deal.

Other interesting tips:
Wear your mask when cutting up onions or copious amounts of jalapenos- you won't cry.

Oh- something too from the grapevine... generally women and children have less powerful spit. We lack the large amounts of acid in our spit that actually breaks down the fog.

Maybe this is why for some people, it just doesn't work. As for me- I say spit, wipe, rinse and dive!

Coming soon to Discovery Channel: THE SCUBA CHEF, Chefs Compete against each other in full Scuba gear. The usual 1 hour time limit will be extended to 3 hours due to having to walk in fins. Assistant Chefs must be in an OOA situation and sharing air from the head chef.

I use/used white paste toothpaste a couple of times at first, and since have used a baby shampoo for defog. As far as keeping it with me, I just keep a small bottle in my GOGGLE:rofl3: :rofl3: box with my MASK.:D I keep my mask in its box for safety reasons, no reason not too use the extra room in the box. Oh yeah, the onion thing, I'll have too try it. Sounds reasonable:crafty: I'll have the wife give it a shot next time she does an onion.
As far as the lighter thing, my luck, I'd melt my new mask then find out my spare had been left out of its box and was smashed.:11: :11: Dive trip ruined!!!! With toothpaste you may run the risk of fogging but no real damage. IMO

Dive safe/Train hard,
Joe

Actually, as I recall, spit is neutral to somewhat alkaline, but regardless of what enzymatic action it may wield to ward off fog, I have but one, simple question...

Was I just (indirectly) called a little girl?

(Sorry, couldn't resist. :D)

I totally do this! Sensitive eyes!

I must have masculine spit.

Except for Mom's spit. You take a tissue and with a mom's spit on it, and you can get rust off a car bumper with that thing! (think back to when you were a kid with a dirty face)...

About the only thing I use a lighter for is to melt nylon threads, keeps things nice and neat.
