Steve, Forgot to ask, when is your next BHB night dive planned for?

I am interested.

Sending a PM now.

Conditions Update:

I tried diving the House of Refuge at the beginning of last week but didn't get past the surf as it was just too strong (i was just getting beaten up by the rocks so I called it a day).

Wednesday I dived Blue Heron Bridge and conditions there were good despite the Strong winds.

Friday I dived Pepper Park. The viz was pretty good to start off with but there wasn't much marine life to be seen. By the afternoon the winds had picked up and with them the surge. This reduced visibility down to only a few feet but the diving was good while it lasted (I did see a small turtle).

Thanks for the report Luke! Shorediving sucks when the vis is low- your braver then I being out there is swell too. Conditions look nasty with a strong east wind for the next week... BHB it is then!

The next available night dive in the creek would be Monday or Tuesday April 26 or 27. Ill post a thread when I nail down a date.

Yep.. I am not up for diving low vis and cooler temps off Ft Pierce.... it is kinda sharky out there.. BullSharky -- when the temps come up the sharks seem to move out deeper..

When the silt had closed right in on my 2nd dive the thought did cross my mind about the prospect of sharks. It was a little unnerving and definetly helped prompt my descision to head in for the day.

Have you seen Bullsharks off the Ft Pierce beaches then? Before I dived BHB on the Wednesday I was at the beach on Singer Island and saw a couple of small 3ft sharks (maybe reef sharks?) swimming up and down the surf only 20ft from the beach (was amazing to watch!).

Luke Bear-- If the temps are under 73 and the viz under 8' the sharks seem to move in between the 1st and second reef line working north to south. I have ran into many larger bullsharks in the area off Pepper Park. For the most part they swim up look at me and move on but a few times they have come back for a second and fourth glance so I came in. I am brave but not foolhardy. I'd rather dive in 20' of vis and 80+ temps anyway. In the summer I only see nurse sharks and Barracuda. Unless some "Fat Tony" is chumming .. Shark fishing in the swimming area...

Orlando Eric has a point- it is the ocean afterall and sharks are out there. for this reason, I only paddle out when I can see the reef from shore- at least you know the visibility is at least top-to-bottom. With this strategy, ive only ever seen nurse sharks during my 10 years of shore diving the Treasure Coast.

Thanks a lot for the info on the Bullsharks. I knew they were on reefs and wrecks further offshore but I hadn't realised they came in as far as the first two reef lines (that's exactly where I was last week!). Like you guys said though, it is the Ocean and they can pretty much go where they please.

I'll keep it in mind for my future dive planning!

Weather dependent I'm going to try and dive the Georges Valentine at the end of April (provided these pesky East winds go away for long enough!).

I also wondered if you had any reccomendations for Shore locations for night dives (other than BHB) for later in the year?

I know you have to be carefull not to bother the nesting turtle population, but is there anywhere that is more suitable than other sites for shore night diving in the local area?
