We are travelling to Cuba in Dec. and for the first time we are taking our own gear. Any travel tips related to travelling with your gear would be very helpful.
I have questions like, would a hockey bag be adequate for our bcd's, masks, fins, etc. We have reg. bag's as carry on's.

Regards,
Steve

Do you have a wetsuit or suits? If your going to use the hockey bag, which will work for now, put the wetsuit on the bottom, then the bc on top of that, and the rest of the items inside, then try and wrap it a bit like a present with the valuables inside......That way you know anything that could break, should they toss your bag ;), wont break.........

I would suggest in the future getting a scuba bag to carry all of your equipment, but even then you will want to wrap everything.....

Have a great trip!!!

I have a large hard shell roller case that has a fabric divider. On one side I load my BCD, fins, mask, wetsuit, gloves, hoods, booties as needed. On the other I pack my clothes. I got it at the Samsonite outlet, it has dual built-in TSA approved locks. I carry my regulators, dive computers, camera bodies and main lens with me. I pack the camera underwater ikelite housing, strobes, arms, spare lens, etc in a Pelican 1620 case and close it with TSA approved locks.

Betwwen the two I can carry all of my dive gear, clothes, camera equipment and keep the iportant stuff with me in carryon.

Make sure you have insurance that covers stolen dive gear...TSA = Take Stuff Away! It is seriously getting rediculous.

As "we" dont get to go to Cuba for the most part, I have no idea how getting out of there will be.

General travel info is......

carry on for me consists of my bp and wing in a computer like bag that also holds my small digi camera and masks. In a small backpack I carry on my regs and computers.

In suitcases (check in) I put everything else from suits to pony. One thing for sure is none of my bags have any dive logos.

Do you come through the USA and have to deal with TSA or are you TSA free from Canada to Cuba? If you come through the USA you might consider taking compass.....has liquid....and putting it in check in. I have heard both ways on the compass and TSA...good and bad.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE to do a trip report. Heavens forgive us....many are just waiting for you know who (and I dont mean Voldermort) to kick it and hope the travel restrictions change.

Hockey Bag works well. Get one with wheels. You will hate lugging the bag if you don't. Pack your mask in your fin pocket. Watch the weight of your bag only 22kgs or 44 lbs if you wish.

Been there three times and had no problem whatsoever with missing/lost gear. Make sure you close and seal well as luggage handlers don't care. Take camera/regs/computer in carry on everything else in checked. Mine always goes free. Travelled both Skyservice and Westjet with no problem. Take dive hangers to hang wet equipment. Make sure you put knives in checked - no problem. If you plan on travelling much get a good dive bag with wheels, you will understand after this trip. Most places there allow you to keep your bag in the dive shop as you may have to swim to greet the boat. I recommend a dry bag to carry your towel to boat. Anything else just ask.

I won't forget that trip report!!
I never thought about having problems with a compass. My Sherwood computer w/compass might be a issue? Anyone else have problems with compasses?
Our fight is direct from Toronto to Cuba.

Steve

Yea compasses are good to go if they are checked, but declare them and their happy. Although I just don't declare them at al land no one seems to notice. Up to you I guess.

hi everyone,
this is my first post on here and i am also going to cuba, i am going this february and thinking about taking my own gear. i have never travelled with my gear before and i have heard that if you take tanks or spare air that you have to completly remove the valves so they can be inspected internally. im wondering if anyone can comment on how safe this is as far as contamanation of your tanks or if i am just better off to rent tanks when i arrive. any advice would be appreciated.
Mitch
