Traveling with regs

Toronto -> Cancun and back last week. No problems, but I read that they had to clarify today that books were OK, so I wouldn't risk trying to bring regs as carry on until they sort things out. The security guys seem to be only allowing items that are specifically designated..

Direct flight or was there a stopover in the US? My understanding that any flight from Canada that touches down in the US has the carry on ban.

This is a bit off the subject, but the idea of banning carry-on is idiotic, ineffective and above all f@@@@@g annoying. How about banning, or at the very least thoroughly searching, individuals who are on a known watch-list. There is an infinite number of ways to carry explosive onto an airplane but only as many potential bombers as there are passangers...and the number goes down dramatically once common sense and good ol' intelligence is used...ah, but that might not be politically correct.
I have to vent somewhere...this seemed like a good spot.

Hey pharmguy we fly out on the 23 and we have also chosen the extra insult , somebody needed freq flyer points , i would be careful how much you are willing to test the security as im sure they are not getting paid enough to put up with the extra BS . no one wants to be tossing what you you cant take with you aboard. as for us i will prob leave my topside behind as they allow my (d70)2.2 lb carmera to hang off my neck (ouch )for 9hrs its the accessories im worried about . thankfuly my uw camera is my partners and is tiny in comparison to its strobe , the strobe goes in the luggage now. you could wear your backplate as life saving equipment ( bullet proof vest and life preserver )
