Dont bother, small plastic freezer bags full of sand put into a pouch belt works nicely.

Trust me on this one :)

You may need the larger bags. Based on the density of quartz, it should take about 4 times the volume of sand to do the job of the lead.

I carry a set of ankle weights in my carry on just to keep the weight out of my checked baggage in order to make the weight restrictions. One of the problems that I have had every time is that they appear strange to TSA xray people. Everytime my carryon has been yanked out for inspection to the point that I keep them in a handy space so that I can show them to the inspector quickly. No big deal really, but someday you might encounter an inspector that won't believe they are ankle weights and may want to cut them open or confiscate them, just an FYI.

I too carry my ankle weights with me and i learnt after my first dive trip that when they roll up in a particular way on the xray they look like something a lady shouldnt be carrying around.

the security guys usually wave me thru as they dont believe me when i say 'but i'll show them to you"

I just tell them before it even gets into the xray machine that it's dive gear and they'll be pulling it aside for visual inspection. Then we get to talking about diving and make it through fairly quickly.

wow, didn't think i'd spark such a debate. i was already doing a golf vacation so my golf bag took up one of my bags. i wasn't able to fit everything else in the other bag so i just took along my wetsuit gear, fins and regulators and then rented my bc, weights and tanks. worked out well. i think it was $55 to just keep them for 4 days.

NO, NO, NO....Do NOT take weights when you travel....

I picked up some friends at LAX after their trip to Cancun a couple years back. They didn't tell me their rollers had their weights...32#'s...FOR TROPICAL DIVING! Anyway, I offered to throw it into my SUV and wrenched my back! They forgot to mention the thing weighed in at 94 #'s.

I can still feel my back tweek when I make certain moves.

(The couple later had a rare "double regulator failure" on a local dive and have not been seen since).
