When my wife and drop $5000.00 or more for a dive trip, the last thing on our minds is the cost or effort to bring our own gear! I know our equipment is in good working order, properly serviced, and fits us. We are familiar with it, and how to repair most little problems (and some big ones). When we head to Fiji, or Bonaire, or Hawaii, or Mexico, or elsewhere, we know we can get maximum dive time without equipment issues, and enjoy the dives because we are comfortable. We are also both 58 years old, yet manage to move our stuff without assistance. The one time we used rental gear was for one day when our gear was delayed getting to a liveaboard leaving from St. Martin. That experience, even with decent rental gear on the boat, affirmed to us the value of using our own equipment. Doing ten to twenty dives in a week makes this even a bigger deal. It may not be as important if you are only going to do a couple of dives during a trip that is not a dedicated diving vacation. I understand there are people who go on those kinds of trips.
