I will be leaving for Aruba in 3 days. Planning on doing a bit of diving (and also looking to find a nice palm tree, a good book and a drink with a pretty umbrella).
I know there are a few wrecks that are suppose to be the highlights. From what I've read/heard, that the sealife isn't anywhere near Bonaire. I'll post when I get back.

I am going to Aruba June 21 - 27, 02. and am looking for information also. Have you gone yet, do have any information. I have been diving four years, mostly Cozumel, and Texas lakes. Also dove lake Michigan last year. I am looking for good dive places to go in Aruba, and a good small group company to go with. I would like to hear from you. Thanks for any information you or others can give me.

Just got back from Aruba on 5-17. As they say....It's one happy Island. There are alot of sites out there for information about the island, so I"ll just stick to the info on the diving.

We (boyfriend & I) went on 5 dives around the Island. We ended up diving with Pelican Adventures, which is located on the pier between the Holiday Inn & Playa Linda hotels. We did look at Red Sail and Unique dive operations but their schedules didn't quite fit with ours. The guys as Pelican were all great. I had sprain my ankle the day before our first dive and was a little concern if I would be able to keep up. Not only did they help me get in & out of the water (without hurting my ankle more), continued to make sure I was OK but actually gave me a tow now and again. The most divers we had on a trip was 7. I think that is unusal. It seems a lot of the dive operators cater to the cruise lines. So if there is a cruise in town, it could be more crowded (fridays are big for that). However, I believe the end of cruise season in May.

We dove the South side of the island - Jane See Wreck and the reef near by. Nice little wreck with the biggest angel fishes I've ever seen. The next day we did the Antilla Wreck during the day and at night. This is a highlight. For a day dive, get out there early. This is a popular site so you get a ton of divers (from all the dive places) and a lot of snorklers. It's a big wreck with lots of growth and sealife. If you do a night dive, definately do the Antilla. We were the only boat out there and only 5 divers on the boat. Beautiful. Eels galore. The next day we dove the Debbie II & blue reef. Debbie has only been down for about 10 years. Not a lot of growth but it's getting there.
The other places I've heard that are good - Gino's Choice, Mangel Halto Reef & Sonesta Airplanes (there are 2).
All in all, warm water, good visiblity, and fun easy dives. I would not call Aruba a dive destination. However, it provides a good mix for land and water activies. I'm sure you had better diving in Cozemel, but I found Aruba very relaxing and a great place to visit. I would definately go back
If you need more info, just let me know. :thumb:

Divediva, I'm going to Aruba early August 2002. I'm wondering how the water temperature there. I am always cold, so I bought a 7mil suit, which I am very happy in. I have used it in for all my caribbean diving & been very comfortable. Do you think that it would be over kill-for Aruba. I don't want to lug it down there & not use it.

Kat,
The water temp seem to be in the high 70's - low 80's. I think 7 mil would be alot but if your use to using a 7 mil suit for warm water diving then I would take it along.

I also run cold especially after a few dives. I took a thermal-fleece type of suit, 2.5 mil. I did get a little cold on one dive after hitting about 70 feet, other then that I was quite comfortable.
If your like me, I would rather be a bit warm then cold.

Anyway, enjoy your trip......

Hi Kat,

I dive a fleece in Bonaire (a couple of islands over)and it is usally warm enough, a bennie cap seems to help me more that more rubber and it sure is easier to carry. Check this web site out, it's an underwater camera on Bonaire and on the bottom of the picture is the current water temp (at about 15 ft deep). http://www.BonaireWebCams.com/BonaireReefCam.php

Hello Kat,

I dive in Aruba most Fridays (I'm part of that cruise crowd DiveDiva was talking about;) ) I wear different things depending on how I'm feeling that day and where I'm diving.

If I'm feeling pretty warm and just doing one dive, I just wear a full length skin. If I'm feeling pretty warm and doing two dives, neither very deep...I'll wear my skin and a 2mm shortie. If I'm not feeling warm and/or I'm doing multiple dives and one of them is deeper...then I wear a full length 3/2 over my skin. Really, at that point the skin is just to make my suit easier to put on :)

All that being said....I'm very warm natured...it's rare that I'm cold in most situations.

Hope you have a great time!

DiveDiva - Glad you had such a great time...the Jane C is one of my favorites...the Sonesta Airplane is fun as well.
