I just don't log dives
I have been researching here on specific scuba trip, travel insurance and have seen much about DAN - Dive Assure etc. and also some of the other travel insurance companies BUT have not seen anything on specifically Frontier MedEX which is who I have had for several fly fishing trips (and so far have never had to use). For a small additional fee they cover a number of sports related activities, including scuba. I was curious if anyone has actually had to use them for a dive or trip accident or covered loss etc. ? Thanks in advance. Kev

I am guessing this is the correct forum for this thread if not please move .Thanks, Kev

Humm? No replies. I thought Med EX was fairly well known perhaps not.

Never heard of it, not that that means anything. The trouble with insurance no one has heard of, is if you are off diving someplace that never heard of it either and need the chamber, they may want you to pay up front. That shouldn't be an issue with DAN or DiveAssure, which are the big ones everyone has heard of. Also, dive accidents have some special considerations, and dive specific insurance like DAN will have people knowledgable about that coordinating transportation and treatment as needed. No idea if Med-Ex has that - I don't see anything about scuba on their website other than they consider it a hazardous activity and will cover it for extra. Maybe I missed something.

The get good reviews at Insuremytrip.com, mixed reviews at Review of FrontierMEDEX Travel Insurance | Travel Insurance Review

They charge less than I pay with my chosen company, but they provide less coverage in some areas. Their plan that offers sports coverage option is the TravMed Choice which does not include cancellation coverage.

I suppose they're okay. Odd that they aren't licensed in Washington state, but they are in New York which has tougher laws and regs.

Yes after more research It seems that Dive Assure and DAN have the most extensive recognition in foreign dive locations. I'm leaning towards Dive Assure for a single trip plan as it is primary and one dive trip this year, is most likely going to be it. Thanks for the replies, Kev

Dive Assure seems fine. Primary means very little - just how the company may split any bills with other carriers who might cover expenses. So many think it has to do with how chambers get paid and how well they accept the coverage, which is a mistake. DAN is the best known and most readily accepted, but if a chamber wants to get paid up front, either DAN or DA can be asked to wire funds.

Thanks, I actually get that, but because my reg. insurance is a catastrophic type with very high deductible $25k, a primary dive /travel plan seems best.

If you have DAN dive insurance and other coverage like regular medical insurance, then the regular medical is primary - DAN secondary, paying what the primary doesn't. In some cases regular medical pays little if any on scuba, so DAN kicks in.

If you have no other insurance, then DAN dive insurance being secondary is moot. It's then your only coverage and simply takes over.

Dive Assure being sold as primary is misleading.

Well it looks as if I will need to call both companies and get more info. Hey thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated , Kev
