I tried both on, and ended up going with a plain BP/W with continuous webbing. This was actually more comfortable than either the transplate, or backplates with "comfort" webbing.

I'm sure each person has different tastes, but if you get the chance to try on others, then I'd suggest it. I thought the harnesses with more padding and stuff would be more comfortable, but I found the opposite to be true.

Although I have not used the Transplate, I personally finmd I prefer a soft harness like the Transpac or SP's X-Tek to a plate. For me I get a much snugger set up and find the tank doesn't shift if adjusted properly.

I used them both in the same day, and really couldn't tell the difference. They were both comfortable, and very snug. I went with the plate because its less money for the same thing, and much more versatile.

Love my TransPac...

I rented a transplate on a dive trip and knew instantly a backplate was the right choice for me. I eventually opted for a hog rig, but if you get a transplate it will be convertible later if you decide to change (vs. the transpac).

Also, don't underestimate the value of having gear that dries fast when you are flying home with it in your checked luggage.
