Train trim, buoyancy & propulsion in pool w/o tank & reg?

You look really young to be living in a retirement community, cute...., but young.

I've been told that one of the biggest issues pool owners (universities, YMCA, etc.) have with scuba classes is damage to tiles along the edge of the pool from tanks. Not from giant strides, but new students who try to gently slide in and bang the bottom of their tank on the edge.
 
The way I learned to sit on the edge and get into the water is to put one hand in front of you all the way to the opposite side of your body to hold the deck/dock (which turns your tank over the water away from the deck/dock), hold the edge with your other hand as you're turning, and just slip in facing the deck/dock. It's much simpler than it sounds and it works.
 
Many people addressed buoyancy and weighting in the pool for practice. During my divemaster course, my instructor had us get in the pool without the BCD & tank to practice finning with frog kicks. Forward, backward & turns. We used our BCD (with tank attached) in front of us for buoyancy and could practice. It took a couple minutes but then you got the lessons down. That helped cement things so that we could work on them even more when fully immersed. I'm sure it would work just as well with the bcd inflated without a tank. I thought it was a great idea FWIW.
