I did 5 dives this weekend and in the first 2 dives there was traces of blood in my mask and none the rest of the weekend. I wipped my nose and it was gone, i do not normally have nose bleeds nor did i have one once i surfaced. Does this happen for any reason? Is this somewhat normal? Does this or has this happened to anyone else?

And as long as it is small amounts of blood is probably nothing to worry about.

It would appear you had a sinus squeeze. Because one or more of your four pairs of sinus cavities were blocked, when you descended, the only way the air in the cavities could equalize with the increasing pressure was, that the cavities shrunk and then filled with blood from the surrounding capillaries. This is definitely a sign that you should go to the ENT doctor and have them looked at. It might have been a one off due to congestion. I have had my septum and nasal passages surgically cavitated, so that I could breathe and equalize better.

Could allergies be a cause of this? This is the start of prime allergy season for me.

yes, indirectly. your allergies affect your sinus and ears, making it
harder for you to equalize properly, thus you end up with a squeeze.

i would agree with both crispos and pipedope. it's probably
nothing to worry about, but i would check with an especialist
(ear nose and throat) just to make sure.

(i am not a doctor, etc..)

If it continues to happen then you really want to see a good ENT that knows diving. Sometimes it is a really simple thing to fix.

From your post it sounds like you had a slight blockage in a sinus that was cleared out in the first two dives. The 3 following dives with no blood are a good sign that it was a minor and temporary problem.

If it comes back, or if you are at an ENT for something else you might have them take a look.
