Totally trivial - diving & fingernail polish?

Does anyone have any suggestions how to keep nail polish on while diving. My husband and I usually do 2 tank dives on a couple days as part of a vacation where we have to "dress for dinner". I feel incomplete with bare nails, but the polish just flakes off (my toes stay on fine?) - but redoing and undoing polish every night for dinner seem a bit much...

Try a good coat of base coat UNDER the nails. Think about it....your toes don't have any free nail, at least not much, for the water to get under and soften the nail. Acrylic nails keep polish because they aren't porous. If you seal your nail, top and bottom, the polish stays on much better. But it still doesn't last as long as you'd like so take your polish for touch ups...the fish don't mind if it's a sloppy patch job!

The other solution is to put the acrilic top coat on the nail polish. I use it and it works although not for the whole week

In my recent experience, nine dives in three days, polish stayed on acrylic nails just fine, even in bright red, which was to match the dive flags I had painted on my big toes!

I take mine off when I dive. You could put it on after diving each day. Seems like a hassle maybe, but since I had a barracuda stalking me as my "chrome" polish flickered in the water on both my finger and toenails as I waded through a school of tiny shiny silver fish that looked just like my finger and toenails... All I could think about was the guy that told us about how a barracuda took off his little toe.

I am not taking any chances.

I would agree with the suggestion about acrylic over your nails. I just did 24 dives during a week in Honduras and never needed a touch up. I also think it helps that I use a top-of-the-line polish (OPI). It's pricey but well worth it.

I don't even bother with the nails, I'm in the water way too often, but my toes are always painted red using the OPI products, has yet to chip away... Very good stuff (under $6 here)

I had gel nails done a few weeks ago for a special occasion. Then I attempted to go diving with them on. BIG mistake. Never again. My significant other who normally loves the done up nails was getting fed up with me not being able to do anything and told me he thought I should get rid of them. So as it stands right now... no polish or gels on the fingers and nice red with a white stripe (dive flag) on the toes works well for me!

Get pink and white acrylic nails. It looks like a french manicure but they make the tips white with the acrylic instead of the paint so they don't chip. My boyfriend always teases me about being the only girl who dives with a french manicure but it holds out! Just make sure and keep them a reasonable length, nothing is more frustrating than talon-like nails that keep you from doing anything!
