I was wondering what are the top places to dive are in Marathon, FL. We have a trip next week planned to go there and would like to see what everybody thinks.

Depend what you're in to:
- The Thunderbolt is the wreck there - in about 100ft of water - very nice dive.
- they have Somberero Reef, which is a marine sanctuary - shallow reef in good condition.

They do have some ledges and drop offs which are good for spearfishing (but not too many chareters take people out spearing)

oh, and about 35th street (i think) , is the Keys Fisheries. Try the lobster reuben - sounds strange but tastes great !

We go to marathon every year and stay in the Vaca cut area. If you are going for mini season the gulf side is full of holes (not much for scenery) but you can drive around and look for color changes or cleared patches of sand usually small hole or rock structure holding bugs or red groupers. Get a planer and drag people around searching is pretty effective.(water depth is usually 6-20ft) On the ocean side Sombrero is nice but protected reef sanctuary. There are plenty of patch reefs and easy to see from the top when viz is good. Marathon is a big place and we just have fun scouting new areas. Bridge diving can be fun too but you "MUST PAY ATTENTION TO THE TIDES" esp in any areas near the bridges too, current can be pretty nasty and water clartiy will go away fast. Hope that gives ya something to shoot for.
