toothpaste on new mask

what is the reason so many people say you need to clean a new mask with toothpaste ???

I believe the mask has a thin protective film applied by the manufacturer to protect the lens during shipping and while sitting in the store on display. So I've been told.

and, I have been using "softscrub" kitchen cleaner. It seems to work better on my last purchase than toothpaste.

Toothpaste is a mild abrasive. It will clean the mask (inside) to get the machining oils that are residual during manufacturing. It will help keeping it from fogging up on a dive (plus it smells good!).


But, I've posted this before, I had trouble with toothpase on my latest mask. I've been cleaning new masks with toothpaste for years, without a problem. This last one was tough. I did it multiple times. I talked to the LDS, and the owner suggested Soft Scrub. I gave him a questionable look. But, after another failed attempt to clean it out with toothpaste, I grabbed his Soft Scrub. It worked like a charm. I rinsed it out really well on the transom of the dive boat (which I suggest), and it's very clear now. I just use some standard de-fog before a dive (or spit in it if you forget/don't have de-fog), rinse, and you should have a clear mask for the dive.

If it fogs up during the dive, just manually let a little water in, slosh it around and clear.

fewer mask cavities in the future??...nah, not really---to get a factory coating off the lenses...

Actually, toothpaste is a fine anti-fog. I have used it for more than 30 years. Although I have tried other products, I have always returned to toothpaste. I like baby shampoo almost as well.

For a new mask that is particularly stubborn about fogging, Soft Scrub works very well.

Just curious why masks don't come with instructions to do this. Granted, I've only purchased two masks.

Are there any manufacturers that state not to do this?

Use a toothbrush to clean any residual product completely from crevices.
It will burn your eyeballs.
Defog whilst saliva exists is no 1 waste of money in diving.


And with all the other stuff to collect why collect extra stuff.
Unless you are averse to kissing.

baby shampoo from the dollar store works just as well to defog the mask before the dive. I put baby shampoo in one of those refillable small bottles you get at hotels, and stash it in my mask case..it doesn't take up any room and works great for me...no tears or burning eyes at all

And, be extra careful to get every last bit of toothpaste out of the cracks and crevices!

Mark I, Mod I saliva works the best as an antifog agent.

Don't ask me how I know residual toothpaste inside the mask burns the eyes.... feels like a jellyfish swam into your mask.....
