Only time there should be more then 2 buddies in a group is if N is not divisible by 2. If you have to make a group of 3 it's best if they are the more experienced divers in the group.

I could not agree more. My regular dive team is 5 guys, so we often end up with a 3 man team. But we are all experienced divers, both in training and time in water. We have strict rules. If one thumbs the dive, we all are up. No questions asked. We stay in a specific formation and are so accustomed to one another in the water we could simply look at one another and see if there was a problem.
