My wife and I are considering the Wind Dancer in Tobago for next year. I looked around the board and saw very little trip report information about this boat and location. From what I learned, Tobago diving can have a lots of current, low viz., and not for the newbie diver. None of this pertains to us. However we were under the impression that because of the location of Tobago, and the currents, nutrients, etc. that you would have more large animal encounters (manta's, hammerheads, whale sharks etc.). From the few trip reports I have found and read, no one mentioned any of these types of encounters. Added to the fact that there are very few trip reports and the price is considerably cheaper for this liveaboard as compared to liveaboards in other areas, makes us wonder if Tobago is that great of a spot for a liveaboard trip. If I want to see the normal Carribean life, there are plenty of places to go with limited currents and greater viz.

Can anyone out there provide any insight, either good or bad about Tobago liveaboard diving? We are mostly interested in "out of the ordinary Carribean encounters".

Thanks.

Jeff

I've seen lots of Manta's and sharks there, but never had the opportunity to observe a whale shark in the waters. Not to say, they don't come in, just I haven't been lucky enough to have the encounter. You also mentioned poor visibility, I guess it depends on what you compare it to. I've always been pleased with the vis, not like the Caymans or Cozumel, but at least as good as the Florida Keys. There are strong currents at times and the water temperatures can be a bit chilly (low to mid 70's).

Go for the trip, you wont be disapointed!

jrrkar,
i was aboard the m/v wind dancer last oct.
there were only 11 guest the week i went and the crew was very accomodating.
the food was prepared well and adequate.
the vessel was clean and in good repair.
i traveled solo and ended up with a private cabin.
the dms knew the dive sites and gave good briefs.
the vis all week was from 50' to 80'.
the current is something to be prepared for and not as calm as cozumel.
all and all it was a good trip and would return.
regards,
