I'm so glad to see this thread. I'll be 58 in less than a month and just got my OW a few months ago. Certainly wish I could have stared sooner, but the soonest you can do anything is NOW. I'm in excellent cardio shape, but the old bod is wearing out after a lifetime of sports and horses. Being underwater brings back that childlike wonder at nature's diversity. Every time is like a treasure hunt and I can't wait to get back in the water. I plan on getting nitrox certified as soon as I can, and plan on diving as long as I am physically able, which I hope is a long, long time.

Aloha

OK guys, I hate to admit it, but I will turn 50 at the end of this year. Honestly, I still feel like I'm 21. I have a decent physcial shape, since I took off 60 lbs, and I can still run with all the other guys on the diveboat. I still do deco diving, padding the bill for my obligation with more time hanging at 15' then my computer says. I know these guys that put all the tables together are young guys, that are built like a brick ****house with a BMI lower than mine (I'm 6'-0' @ 203#). I come up the anchor line slow (you would be surprised how thes guys come up like a NASCAR race) and take my time. I carry doubles always, and sling a 30, so SAC is never an issue. I was certified 25 years ago, so I've kept up with the times (for the most part), and I feel I have no issues. Looking forward to my diving career way into my 70+, so I am only half way done (at a minumum).

When they crane me on and off the divboat in a bowsains chair, I might look at evaluate something...................

My husband is 51. Our trip to Galapegos two years ago we were the youngest couple. The gentleman who set up the trip was probably at least 70 and dives constantly.
Stay in shape, keep your weight down and don't smoke. If no major health issues than should be fine. Do your dream!

Don;t let your age hold you back from living life the way you want to my friend, as long as you are healthy live it to the fullest doing things you love to do!

I've never smoked, done drugs or got into alcohol but I did get into sports that have left my body a bit worse for wear. I inherited genes that make watching my weight easy... It is right were I can see it but I have one of the lowest BMI's of any female in my family. I plan to keep diving until they peel my dive gear off of me, take it away from me
not sure who would be brave enough to try that!
or I can't remember where I put it!

Pfffttt numbers mean nothing to me.. when I turned 50 I started counting backwards so now I am 40 again!

I just have to say that this is one of the most impressive forums I have ever read...truly inspirational!

The guy who trained me is about 78 years old and has been diving since he built his first reg out of an old gas regulator in the late 50's or so i beleive. We are still out diving every weekend training new recruits and having fun even though he says he was thinking of giving up diving back in 86, one year before i was even born! He huffs and puffs a bit geting his kit on but once he is in the water there is nobody who can keep up with him :D

I started scuba diving a week before I turned 50, now 5 months later I have done 77 dives.

I wont be stopping just because of age, I LOVE DIVING :-)

I don't see any reason age should matter as long as you're healthy enough for the dive activities.

I also believe that improving your diving skills (by diving more and/or continued course enrollment) is a great idea. Makes you a better diver, and safer for any buddies you dive with.

My guess would be the crane operators cert.
