Diving isn't for everyone. The vast majority of new divers that certify at Monterey are not diving a year later. I don't like diving at Monterey but I do it anyway to support those in the family who don't know any better.
I started diving in warm water and not every diver would be up to the kind of diving I used to do. The typical weekend came out like this: Friday after work, grab up a couple of buddies and head from Singapore to Mersing, Malaysia. Then we would have dinner in the outdoor Malay restaurants and then walk across the street to the Chinese restaurants where we could buy beer. Some time around 9 or 10 we would show up at the boat and load our gear.
The boat would leave whenever the tide was favorable and the ride was usually about 4 hours or so. More often than not, we would arrive around daylight. We would offload some of our camping gear and pitch a tent on the beach. Remember to not camp directly under a coconut palm tree!
Breakfast came next. Then we got back on the boat for a couple of dives before lunch/dinner. After dinner we would get back on the boat for a night dive.
Now dinner was usually something cooked up by the chef at the American School in Singapore and the New Zealand and Australian embassies would provide the wine - in large 5 liter bags! Just kick back and enjoy the warm beach. Oh, and fresh curry made from the milk of freshly chopped coconuts.
Sunday breakfast followed by breaking camp and away we go for another couple of dives on the way back to Mersing. When we were lucky and caught a couple of lobsters, we would stop in Jahor Baruh and have them cooked and served as an early dinner. I had the absolute best lobster with cold white sauce I have ever had during one of these events.
Worst case, we go back to Singapore and head over to Tanjong Punggol for a seafood dinner. I'll never forget the time we had a downpour after the pepper crab was served. Everyone else ran for cover. I stayed for the crab - I had been wet before but I never had better crab. Crazy American...
These weekend trips were scheduled every weekend except for about a 3 month period when the algae was blooming. It was a tough life... To think I had to take a week off for both a Thailand (liveaboard out around the Similan Islands) and Maldives trip...
Here's the problem: the weekend trip cost $25 for all boat/air/food/accomodation (per person). If you hauled another diver, it was customary for them to pay $25 for the trip. Now you're almost even. If you carried a 3d diver, it covered your gas and parking. So, basically, you can eat, drink and dive for free. Every week...
And that why I like diving.
