We are looking to give Cozumel a second try in July. We want a condo or hotel in town, walking distance to places to eat or drink. If it works out well would prefer a place with a kitchen so we could cook breakfast (eggs and lots of bacon gets pricey eating out) So does it make financial sense to rent a car? I can't see needing it but a few times a week, we will dive with xtsea divers and will will pick a place that they service. Unless yall think there are places we need should see while we are there all we really need transportion for is grocery and booze runs. Thanks Bill and DeeDee

We usually stay at Casa Mexicana. No kitchen, but breakfast, arguably the best buffet on the island, is included. we never cook because there is so much good cheap food on the island. Mega is about 2 blocks south and we stock up on snacks, bakery goods, beer, water, coconut water , etc. With the exception of La Perlita, I don't remember ever taking a cab to go eat. Everything is that close.

I'm not sure what Blue XTSea does for Dive pick ups, but email Christi and I'm sure she can work something out. I think they may pick up downtown, but I'm not sure.

At 20:1 ish exchange rate, cabs are cheap. If you rent a car, opt for the insurance, I have heard horror stories about what happens if you don't have the insurance and have an accident. Isis rent a car seems to have an excellent reputation on this board if you decide to rent.

Safe travels,
Jay

Without a doubt, if you are a couple I recommend the Casa Mexicana (where we have stayed for many years now). You'll reside in the best hotel San Miguel has to offer (in my opinion) and will be within walking distance to the best of the best restaurants and the few you may not want to hike to will be a cheap and fast cab trip to get to and fro (thinking El Moro and Pescaderia San Carlos). Don't rent a car or scooter if staying in town as you'll never use it (been there done that) because you won't need it and parking it will be a PITA. For what a car rental will cost you can take all the taxis you may need with no worries about that rental car that will quickly start to feel like an iron ball chained to your ankle when it comes to figuring out where to park it all the time. Vacation is about eliminating stress and enjoying yourself. The Casa Mexicana with no car and letting the taxi mafia run you about is stress free unless you really care to argue about a quoted $3 cab ride that by the book should cost $2.

Last time we were there we ate out for ridiculously cheap. Get off the main drag and you will find that the meals get better and cheaper. Also if you haven't found Tony Romes yet look him up. The ribs are delicious.

Sometimes it seems like you're spending a ton of money on taxis... until you do the math. A car is $35ish a day... Hard to spend that on taxis in a day.

It will be much cheaper to use taxis. We will rent a car again in February. I like independence.

+1 for Casa Mexican.
+1 for El Moro.

I usually stay at the Casa Mexican for 10-14 days. The made to order breakfast is awesome, perfect start to the day. The hotel is clean, quiet, the staff is great and excellent location. No need for a car, take the occasional taxi (they are always waiting right outside). The Mega is only two long blocks away.

If I was going for longer than two weeks I would look to rent a condo or house as a single room hotel room gets a bit old about then.

Walk straight back about 5 blocks and try Los Sera's, awesome and they even have fantastic pizza. You should see the line on Sunday nights :)

Last year's new favorite was Taco Dias near the gas station - the steak tacos....mouth still watering thinking about that little place.
