from where im sitting, this whole tipping thing sucks. the company i work for is Scotts (miracle gro, osmocote, roundup etc) and we have alot of US people here working for us and they say all the hotel/restuarant staff hit them for tips becuase they know they are american and its an accepted thing but they dont dare try to do the same to the australian guests. again, if you are so impressed by your dive crew please give them something-but i also believe tip info on websites is aimed at the americans who are institutialized to tipping.stu_in_fl:from a fairly expensive livaboard in PNG - see the under heading gratuities : http://www.febrina.com/PlanningGuide.html
whereas in the US & Carribean, 10-15% is the usual, other places have their own norms that should be followed (tipping is always up for discussion as cultures are so different around the world - from the US style of tip everything, to others where it is either not done, is insulting or even illegal)..however even for PNG I'd do a little more than the amount suggested on the website !
not saying i dont do this when in the US, im aware how little some staff are paid, just doesnt mean i have to enjoy it. Geez, i sound so tough on this-but truely in my country people wages are quite good in the service industry so im just not use to it.
i suppose if the website indicates $15US per day thats your indicator (almost $25AUD for us).
btw, no we didnt get married underwater-we had 2 dives, got married in front of dive shop and then went out for dive immediately after for the official photos-Hideaway Islands, Vanuatu.
