I've read so many posts about tipping that now I am a bit confused. We will be in Cozumel in a few weeks and I am planning on tipping $50mxn per person per tank. Does this seem about right? I am not planning to bring any US currency so will pay with moneda nacional (Pesos).

It depends on what you are paying for your diving. If you're going out with an op that charges around $50 for a 2 tank dive, then you are about right. If you are going with an op that charges $80-100 for a 2 tank dive, then you are a bit shy.

i always tip my divemasters 10% to 15% of the cost per two tank dive per day of diving. usually $10 to $12 a day, and i just pay after we a finished diving for the trip . i actually try to take the divemaster(s) out for dinner then tip them afterward. done this for years, they seem to appreciate it. i hope its good.

More than that...at least 15% or higher, depending on service.

Wow, MMM, you're generous. The OP is talking about tipping about 10% on a $100 2-tank dive (100 pesos). How much do you tip as a percentage?

You might think about taking US currency. We were just there in January and US money is accepted pretty much everywhere and most of the time we even got change back in US money (tee-shirt shops and taxi drivers...). I would say though that $10-$12 a day for 2 dives (per person) is probably pretty standard. We ended up giving our crew quite a bit more at the end of our trip because we really liked them and they retrieved my mask on the last dive!

I didn't see anywhere where he mentioned who he was diving with or how much he was paying for his diving. If he's paying $100 for a two-tank, then I would have to assume he was diving with Aldora...but again, he didn't tell us that unless I missed it somewhere.

Ah-yeah, the grand ole tipping debate. If you have to ask, you can't afford it! I love it when people proclaim that they "ALWAYS tip AT LEAST $x". We'll, I ALWAYS tip AT LEAST $0! If the service is bad, they get nada and it goes up from there.

Tipping is a personal decision. The standards (15% to servers, $5 per tank, etc.) only exits for less civilized people that have a habit of tipping. The standards are a reminder to them that tipping is customary since the person(s) receiving the tip are more than likely being paid peanuts. If you go on what feels like a $2-tip dive, tip $2. If you go on a $10-tip dive, tip $10. But please, don't do the all time injustice of always tipping $5 regardless of anything else.

With that said, I've had very few instances of a $2-tip dive or less in Cozumel.

That's certainly valid, but if I went on what I considered a $2 tip dive, I wouldn't stop at just tipping $2. I'd find another dive op. We use a reputable shop and have been happy with all of the DMs that we have been with. If that wasn't the case, we would certainly complain. But I expect each of the dives down there to be worth at least a $5 tip, and our shop is closer to the $50 end of the spectrum.
