Hi,
Are there any specifics on tipping your dive master's? We have in the past and we're not sure if it was too much or not enough. We tend to be generous tippers in general.
Thanks!

Sneak up behind them and give them a nudge. The cool ones will make a big splash and then float.

Seriously- this has been hashed many many times- it largely depends on how long, and where they work/live.

For a week long stay at an AI where you dive your butt off, $125 split between the Boat Captain (maybe 60/40) and DM would be greatly appreciated. Was your idve safe, memorable and convenient? These guys don't make much of a salary.

You'll know the superb DM's and Boat Captains/boat boys when you have one.

This comes up frequently on here. I tip at least $5 a dive, so if I do a two tank trip I tip the crew $10. In Florida 2 tanks are around $60-$70, so 10 bucks is pretty close to 15%. If the crew really helps me I am glad to tip a bit more.

Some people on here insist on not tipping. Ignore them.

Never feel like tipping is mandatory.
Give a tip if you feel the DM deserves it. Did he make your dive memorable, like in showing you little things, or in giving you interesting info on what you saw? Was he professional, friendly? Go ahead and give whatever you feel comfortable with (like what you would like to receive for a tip...)
If he just went underwater with you, or made anything that made you uncomfortable, a smile will be more than enough.

I agree with Matt. Yes, tipping is not mandatory, but in Florida where I dive, the DM's usually work for tips, very similar to a waiter. I have no problem giving the DM $10 per trip, as I dive the same boats and get very good service. If I am flat one day, I'll make it up on the next trip.

I also go 5-8 bux/dive. (The higher amount if they actually lead a dive I'm doing - the lower if they are just helping onboard and reboarding the boat.)

Generally, $10 for two dives is my norm.

Thanks for all the responses! I'll check out the threads. We will be diving in Cozumel.(Cant Wait!) Last time after a 2 tank dive, we gave the DM $15.00 for the two of us (Cozumel). We really liked the DM and have requested him again, so, maybe we'll up it this time. I'm guessing they work for tips there.
Thanks again!!

In Florida, especially Palm Beach County, there is one simple rule: Tip huge!! I'm talking about mortgaging your house so you can tip. The DM community needs it ;)
