I had quit to get certified and then within 6 months started back. After another year + of smoking, I quit again. The difference under water was amazing for me. I didn't realize how polluted my lungs must have been..breathing was much harder (or at least I blew thru my air quick enough). Best thing I did was give it up for good :)

I quit cold turkey 4 years ago. At the time I was like 3 packs a day and couldn't walk up a flight of stairs and be conversational. Now I run 10 mile charity races laughing the whole way.

Quiting is easy, I have never looked back. Best thing I have ever done for myself. It is not about adding extra years to your life, but quality.

I see people at work outside smoking, and think how pathetic they are. Sallow skin, raspy voice, shallow breaths, stink, and a slave to that cigarette. That was me once. But most people would never know it now...

Hi to all the ex-smokers!! Thanks for your posts it really motivated me to stop smoking. I have been smoking for many years but I am going to quit smoking within the next 3 days. I have thought about quiting now for many weeks, maybe even years!!

Seaducer, I agree with your statement that smokers are pathetic, that is very true. We as smokers are slaves to that cigarette.

Is it true that the first 7 years after quiting is the worst???

During 1989, I did some dives at Guinas and Otjikoto lakes in the then called South West Africa (It is now called Namibia). These lakes are up north in Namibia close to a town called Tsumeb. At that time I was doing military service and our Sergeant Major was part of a diving team attempting a record breaking deep dive in Guinas lake. Four of us were granted leave to assist in that attempt. Well, our jobs were to set up camp and to do all dirty work.

My other job (I've been diving since 1984) was to dive down to the record breaking divers, during their deco stops, and assist the support divers during their filming. My task was to hold the spotlight to insure sufficient light during the filming period. The spotlight was actually powered by a surface generator. Remember, in those days technology wasn't what it is today regarding underwater cameras, etc!!

To make a long story short, one of the record attempt divers was a smoker. The 2 divers had to do about 6 hours of deco stops, and the smoker was really craving for a cigarette. We took a packet of cigarettes and a lighter down to him on his last leg of deco stops. He didn't think that was funny and showed us a few more hand signals that is not really applicable during diving. After surfacing and after he had a few puffs on his cigarette we had a good laugh though.

In any event the record divers were Boetie Scheun and Eben Benade. They were based in Windhoek, Namibia at that time and broke the South West Africa depth record. They did 130 meters (426 feet) that day!! It shows that even smokers can do it deeper.

Look at it this way, Stay smoke free for a year and you will have saved enough
to change all, or most of you gear and still have enough left over to go on a dive hoilday!
I live in canada, and smokes are around $8.00 a pack, Do the math. I Quit 9 years ago.
Remember, that so long as you do not smoke one , you are a Non-Smoker.
Don,t give up! It,s well worth the effort.

I don't smoke. What should I quit to go diving? (mind you "whining" is not an answer that I'll accept)

rhephburn3900, I will save R14 600 (That is US$1900) during a year for not smoking. I can buy a lot of extra diving gear for that!!

Congrats! It really is not as hard as most people think before they quit.

Do you mean 7 weeks? 7 days? I guess the first week was really hard, then after that it was mostly not reaching for my pack after meals or getting in the car. That lasted a month or so and then I just was a non-smoker and had no troubles after that.

Best thing I ever did for my self was quit smokin 10 years ago. If I could do it any one can. 2 packs a day for 25 yrs

Pir8, thanks for that, I've got more or less the same smoking "logged" as you!!

Seaducer, I'm saying 7 YEARS. Hopefully it will be weeks.
