Quit eating fried foods.

Just did. However salads are fiendishly expensive as well. So now I'm riding my bicycle to work to save money on the bus. Amounts to about a dive a month. Good thing I'm teaching or I'd be stranded.

To return to the thread a collegue of mine tried to quit about a year ago. Long time heavy smoker. He grew all pale and bloated and physically sick. Still he hung in there for about 5 months but things actually worsened and finally the emotional toll and physical stress influenced his ability to work as a teacher to a degree that he just had to quit trying. Then he quickly returned to normal. For however long. It's powerful stuff and I really admire those who manage to rid themselves of the habit. Any bad habit really.

I quit years ago. Despite her father dying from lung cancer, her sister dying at 63 from lung cancer,(both heavy smokers) my ex never quit. She is currently in the hospital, undergoing radiation, will do chemo if she gets strong enought to tolerate it, but is projected to have less than 6 months.QUIT NOW!!!!

I finally quit in May of 1991 (cold turkey), after many failed attempts. It was one of the best things I ever did. For me it wasn't easy, but with determination and will power I succeeded.
You can do it too, just be strong and determined.

During 1989, I did some dives at Guinas and Otjikoto lakes in the then called South West Africa (It is now called Namibia). These lakes are up north in Namibia close to a town called Tsumeb. At that time I was doing military service and our Sergeant Major was part of a diving team attempting a record breaking deep dive in Guinas lake. Four of us were granted leave to assist in that attempt. Well, our jobs were to set up camp and to do all dirty work.

My other job (I've been diving since 1984) was to dive down to the record breaking divers, during their deco stops, and assist the support divers during their filming. My task was to hold the spotlight to insure sufficient light during the filming period. The spotlight was actually powered by a surface generator. Remember, in those days technology wasn't what it is today regarding underwater cameras, etc!!

To make a long story short, one of the record attempt divers was a smoker. The 2 divers had to do about 6 hours of deco stops, and the smoker was really craving for a cigarette. We took a packet of cigarettes and a lighter down to him on his last leg of deco stops. He didn't think that was funny and showed us a few more hand signals that is not really applicable during diving. After surfacing and after he had a few puffs on his cigarette we had a good laugh though.

In any event the record divers were Boetie Scheun and Eben Benade. They were based in Windhoek, Namibia at that time and broke the South West Africa depth record. They did 130 meters (426 feet) that day!! It shows that even smokers can do it deeper.

Hahahaha Such a small world!!
He'll never give up those smokes! And nobody will convince him!:D

I'm still smoking. I keept quitting and then going back. My wife is, quite frankly, a horrible influence on me. She can start and stop pretty much at a whim, and we'll quit, then she'll buy a pack a while later and the next thing I know, I'm smoking again. I hate this. I get out of breath walking up 2 flights of stairs, and I KNOW that I feel so much better when I stop. I've got 5 packs left in this carton. I think it's time to buy some patches and just stop once and for all.

knfmm....Time for us both to stop. I'm a newbie diver as well and maybe diving will give me the little extra edge to quit. My wife would love it. A buddy that I got my OW cert with quit and it makes me feel so weak to fire up around him. He used a prescription from his doc to help....says it helped a lot. I am going to get the details and give it a try. Good luck, it's a hard habit to break.

I was never a smoker, but I began to jog over this summer and I can tell you that it makes a HUGE difference with your diving. My SAC improved very much by the increased cardio and I would encourage you to try it. Perhaps it will help you stay "quit" from smoking. Good Luck!!

mikecotrone.....isn't there a quarry or something just south of Danville, across the line into NC?? I seem to remember my OW instructor mentioning it. I did some of my cert dives at Rawlings, but obviously want to try new places. I hear Summerville Lake in WV is really nice.

Yes!! JMR Quarry in Blanch, NC. We dove it this morning!! :)

It is very clear and has alot of cool things sunk in it. It is about 86 feet or so which is what I registered on this mornings dive (we were at the bottom most of our 40 min dive).
