This image was extracted from video I took this weekend of the scythe butterflyfish right here on Catalina (East End Quarry)! Although we normally think of this family as a warm water one, the scythe butterflyfish prefers cooler, deeper waters in the subtropics and tropics but can be found within easy SCUBA depths in the colder waters here... if you see it at all.

The scythe butterflyfish is found from Catalina to the Galapagos. Although considered subtropical to tropical, it prefers deeper colder water in the southern parts of its range (down to 500 ft near Cabo), but can be found closer to the surface here on Catalina due to our cooler waters.
