not sure I agree with opening vale all the way up (that's so it doesn't wear the back up o ring ((plastic )) ) as for purging for 5 secs and blowing up the bc till the opv pops on every dive are you crazy ? . id never let you do that diving with me as for looking at your gauge before going in I teach that to EVERY open water student

Always know and note your tides

Check your bouy line status after clipping your boat

take special care and be organized when doffing gear before climbing back in or you might sink without your reg :p

Yes on the valve open all the way. No need to torque it open but open it all the way and leave it the hell alone. The purging of a reg in general shows you to be a total newb and for 5sec MIGHT get you killed. Simply take two good breathes from each reg while watching your SPG, you are good. Nothing worse than being on a boat of all new divers getting ready to do their check dives and you hear 876249786948659 regs being purged into oblivion. Same with airing up a BCD until the OPV pops. Unless you are in the water on the surface and it makes that funny farting noise.

Mine makes that noise on the boat, even when not inflating it... followed by a game of "what's that smell?"

1. Never navigate by something that can move, even if you think it won't.
2. Never go on a trip without testing serviced gear.
3. Always take the lens cap off before closing the housing.

I just realized I forgot third one........be careful what you buy on Fleebay........it took me three tries to get myself a decent set of 18650's. It cost me some supposedly great night dives.
what 18650's did you go for? Trying to get some decent ones myself. Cheers.

Things I learned over the years:

1. Don't make more than one gear change at a time. Even small changes can become a big nuisance during the dive, but more significant changes (like undergarment) should not be combined with any other change. On the other hand, if you love drama in the dive, by all means make lots of changes each dive. :) I learned this the hard way.

2. SLOW DOWN. Rushing on land will likely cause you to make a mistake that can ruin your dive or create a "situation" underwater. Rushing to keep up underwater can cause CO2 buildup which is unpleasant at best, and dangerous at worst.

3. Related to #2, never allow people to rush you, assuming you are not glacier slow. Granted, if you are taking 3x longer than everyone else to gear up, maybe do some practice between dives, but if you are in the ballpark, then good buddies will always wait for you. Better to be calm and happy and have a great dive than the alternatives.
I learned number 1 a couple of weeks ago the hard way. Don't try a new bc and undersuit on the same dive.

3. Don't blindly trust anyone.
Experts are people just as stupid as you are that just have more experience screwing up already, but there are always new mistakes they haven't tried yet.

Steeling that one - made me laugh.
