I agree with Gator. You go down together - you come up together. This also works if one of the team is cold, having a bad day, whatever the reason it's irrelevant. Any member of the team can thumb the dive whenever they need to.

I don't feel sorry for people that are angered because they have to end a dive prematurely. The dive will always be there another day. Sometimes I dive with people that get cold faster than I do. They give me the cold sign and we end the dive. No question and NO disapointment. The people I dive with are my friends, so I won't be selfish and put my needs or their safety at risk. I wouldn't put my safety at risk either. How would they explain to my wife that I continued the dive without them and now couldn't be found? That's a huge burden to place on a friend and I won't do it for an extra few minutes of bottom time.

Like yesterday? True, we could have gone around the octopus infested rock piles one more time... but when I asked if we could thumb you were gracious enough to cut it off at a 45 minute dive.

I had a dm for advanced open water that didn't want me to dive doubles . He said that with that much gas I could get myself in a deco that I was unprepaired for. I looked at him and ask how long he has been diving.He said two years with a smug look. I let him know that I have been doing single gas deco for years , and that I was in this class to get the card so I can move on to advanced nitrox( prerequisite for any tech class ) His ego couldn't take it, he wigged . I did get my cert , he did become an instructor and I don't use that shop anymore. The rest of my trainning came from instructors that I interveiw before signing up for the class. The lesson I learned was " Take lessons from instructors who know what there talking about. and watch out for DMs that think they know what there talking about"

Crazy........ I was told by some clown in the LDS (should know better) that doubles are "pretty much for more bottom time, not really for redundancy". I started to explain why they are redundant...................like talking to a brick wall. And I don't even dive doubles yet, was just looking at pony bottles.

Either the guy is a moron or was just yet another example of desparate LDS sales tactics so he could put one over on me and sell me a pony. I REALLY hate this crap spewed from fellow divers that should know better. What is really sad is that this mis-information could someday get a fresh newbie hurt or killed. It's just not right.

Actually you've never been a problem. Yesterday - we had a fun dive and as you said - we would would have just been doing laps. It wasn't a matter of being gracious.
What this boils down to is common courtesy. Your dive buddy / team are the people that you are there to share the experience with. You and they are there if someone should be put in a life threatening circumstance. While we all willingly accept the hero role, the same should be true about looking out for the well being and comfort of our buddy and team. I don't like diving with an AH who doesn't give a wit about me and is there for only their agenda.

In retrospect I could have thumbed our first dive yesterday. Remember when I had the leak in my drysuit? It wasn't a bad leak and while I got a little chilly on that dive it was of no consequence. I chose not to because it was under control and I knew it wouldn't be a big deal. It wasn't because I was concerned about how you would feel.

BTW... for the other readers... yesterday we did two anchored boat dives with a total of six divers divided up into three primary buddy pairs. The whole group stayed together (for the most part) due to HID lights.

We hung thermos bottles of hot soup at 20' and 10'.

Simon we had already done two laps and on the last one I was carrying a 10# downrigger ball. I used a double ender to attach it to the anchor chain... and then started thinking about the hot soup.
