Once the barrel is in the body the pin can't go anywhere.
I usually insert the pin into the groove of the plug and then unscrew the plug enough to hold the pin in place while I insert the barrel into the case.
It really up to you how many turns you then screw in the plug......For my personal regs I leave it all the way out if it is being used as a primary and 2 to 3 turns in if it's a back-up.
Remember this plug is an actual user adjustable knob on the more expensive models.
