Am looking at a dive computer and would like to hear anyone's thoughts on the Suunto Vyper. Pros? Cons? I would probably use it with wrist bungee mounted as opposed to in a console.

Been using one since 2004, good computer IMO, now use as a back up as I primarily use a VYTEC due to mixed gas options.

Always use wrist mount so I can read it when taking photos

I was looking at the Zoop, Vyper and Vyper Air. I wanted a wrist mount instead of a console as well. I ended up ordering the Vyper Air (no wireless yet), mostly because the only complaint I saw about the Vyper was the small buttons, and I believed the boot on the Vyper Air made the buttons easier to manipulate with cold water gloves on. I will get the wireless AI when funding gets approved.

Thank you for the good info!

Since I'm still looking for a replacement for a PDC I had to sell off a few years ago, I looked at the Vyper. Two things I liked about it was 1) Gauge Mode 2) Deco Stop timer is in Min:Sec (for reference I am told by Zoop owners that that PDC only displays the minutes and not seconds on the countdown).

Also second for the wrist mount, and bungee it.

I use the Suunto Vyper. Had mine for 4 years now. Excellent performance and no problems. Good history and easy to use. I have no reservations endorsing it.

My Vyper is 10 years old now and has turned just recently gone into backup duty because it doesn't allow gas switching mid-dive. Great reliable computer during it's 10 year tenure.

Just had some minor issues: As mentioned earlier, the buttons are small so can be cumbersome with thick gloves on. Not really an issue since I rarely need to use the buttons while in the water except while night diving. To engage the backlight one has to push the light button down for 1 sec before the light engages.

I've been diving with a Vyper since 2005. My first one crapped out earlier this year (depth sensor died), and after doing some research just decided to replace it with the same. It's fine for recreational diving, but more conservative than some other computers if you're doing days of multilevel multiple dives each day on vacation somewhere. I heard the Zoop is basically the same, except for one or two minor features

Mine is mounted in a Suunto console with a compass and pressure gauge

the vyper is a great computer but it has a defect in the programing in regard to O2 saturation if you dive below or close to 1.4 PP it gets to 60,70 % in a very short time (like 30 min) other than that i found it a very good computer, robust and worth the money.

I have two Vypers, like them for rec. diving

Pros - easy to read display, gauge mode, nitrox, affordable, robust, user changeable battery, download if you like that
Cons - pretty conservative but that doesn't really bother me, you have to buy an expensive proprietary cable for the download

Vyper doesn't display seconds for stop times either, or in any other mode... Vyper is the same unit as Zoop/Gekko with some extra features 'unlocked'. Vyper Air has seconds I think
