And honestly, a simple unbalanced piston regulator is what most people need. Especially if they only dive in the tropics. They are tanks and have less parts that go bad.

Yeah its too bad the hose routing is such a sucky spiderweb on most unbalanced pistons. I have a Mk2/r190 on one of my deco regs (generally use it as my O2 reg) and its pants.

I sent an email off to scubatoys asking what they thought would be the better of the 2 since they'd be similar in price and they seem to like the Hollis one best.

Here's my "reasoning" thus far between the two

Hollis
-Pre O2 Cleaned, already DIN
-Simple design, easy service
-Free O2 Clean parts for life
-Tried and tested design (just rebranded Oceanic O2 reg from UK)

CDX5/Alpha8
-Slightly less expensive
-Commonality with my other CDX5s
-Higher performance First stage, less prone to icing

Does oceanic use O2 Viton parts in their normal kits? or would I have to constantly replace these myself each time.

Nope. They use rubber o-rings. You can buy viton o-rings which are compatible on ebay. Other considerations are the high pressure seat and diaphram. They can be cleaned, but are made of a material that oxygen tends to eat up.

Ultimately, either of them would likely work just fine for you. I'm still a fan of the Alpha 8/CDX5 package tho. Yes, you would have to have the first stage O2 cleaned, but that's not a big deal, and that first stage is perfectly capable of being used with O2, even with the stock kit. I was told that by someone who worked for Oceanic, and is a tech instructor.

Also, I looked up in my manuals, and the Alpha 8, GT3, and Delta 4 all use the same overhaul kit. So if you end up doing your own servicing, you only need one first stage kit, and one second stage kit to service any of your regs in a pinch.
