The Scubalert works both under the water and above the water. It just stays attached to your inflator hose. It's completely out of the way and you would not want to get it, disconnect your inflator, attach it and re-connect your inflator when you need to use it - there's no time! It's small and just stays put between dives.

Even if you have a scubalert, a whistle is still a good, extremely loud, tiny thing to have attached up high on your inflator hose also.
