It's January, Mother Nature. Stop with the hot weather already here in SoCal. It is throwing off my annual migration. I should be heading toward the warm, clear waters of the tropics by now but instead I'm luxuriating in the sun topside and fairly warm water! Heck, it was almost 80 F up in San Simeon last week while I was filming elephant seals. It was 90 F in Lake Forest the afternoon I got to my son's.
Last year I was heading to the Bahamas about now and anticipating three weeks in the Philippines. This year I haven't even researched my first trip... the environmental cues just aren't there to trigger my flight response!
Back in the years I was with the Catalina Conservancy, I researched rainfall patterns on the island. One of the patterns I detected was early season rain, followed by dry mid-winter then heavy rainfall in March and April. If that's the case, looks like I'll be heading south late this year!
