I had a conversation yesterday with a client of mine who just completed a Discover Scuba class in St. Croix. She was so excited, especially having taken her expensive new underwater camera rig down and snapping up several photos. I've been friends with this client (actually her husband) for several years, so I thought I'd share some of our recent photos from Roatan. Now, I'll be the first to admit that my underwater photography skills are somewhere between those of a narced diver in an OOA situation and an untrained monkey rigged with scuba gear. That being said, she said the best quote that I had to share:

"Wow - You must have gone down much deeper than I did, cause I didn't see anywhere near that much color!"

So I have to ask - what the heck are they teaching discover scuba students and/or what other funny first time scuba comments have you heard?

The photo was taken at about 28fsw off shore in front of Sea Grape Plantation.

wow, great pic

love that red hind

as for the class, when i took discover scuba (which was a resort class, basically a lecture,a pool session, and a dive) they didn't cover anything except the basics:
how to wear the stuf, how to breathe, not to stop breathing, and how to read the depth gauge

other than that... that was it

yea when i did it they tought me how to read the depth/spg, how to breath, and attempted to teach me bouyancy but the instructor ended up doin the bouyancy for me (i was only about 10 at the time.

Teach? My Discover class was done on the dive boat after it picked some of us up from the Windjammer boat. About 5 or 10 minutes on equalizing, mask clearing, BC inflating maybe. More of a "get in the water and we'll show you how." :11:

Hense the name "Discover SCUBA" as I understood it it is a hand held dive with a DM or instructor to peak your interest and make you pay and extra $100 before getting you to pay $300+ for OWD.

yeah, it is what it is

and there's only so much time, and only so much can be covered

I thought it was discover how to throw away money.
Nah, it's the first time thrill for many of us - how some of us got hooked. :crafty:

I helped with a class of med students from Tripler recently and got a little chewin' out for showing them their inflator hose. The instructor said they are not supposed to touch that in Discover Scuba and didn't I know the program standards. (not really)

Then she told them they were like herding cats. ...we all got chewed out.

They were very cute, crawling along the bottom, riding their unicycles, scattering in a hundred directions.

My discover scuba was at the Barrier Reef off Port Douglas, Queensland. Quicksilver Dive on the boat on the way out do the introductory theory. A bit of physiology, physics, equipment review and safety procedures. Even a video showing how to get the gear on and water entry.

The dive went for 35 minutes with a video taken by their videographer (extra charge but well worth it....My first is now one of the most frequently played DVD's after a few wines with friends.:coffee: Even outrates my wedding video:popcorn: ).

Very professional and all the appropriate information for myself although a couple of the others struggled with the physics.
