I guess I should appreciate my LDS doning my OW with just me. Thats right, Just 1 student. My cost was $350.00 and I dont think that was too bad for private instruction.
I would not have realized it at the time, but paying extra for a private course really is probly worth it in many cases. I have no idea what I paid...?

I feel your pain. My class got cancelled twice before they finally agreed to have the class with just 2 people. The night before class started, the other student showed up with a dr.s note stating he couldn't dive. Class was cancelled again. I finally just agreed to pay a discounted rate for a private class (since it was their fault). I have a dive trip already paid for and couldn't risk not being certified if yet another class cancelled. The private class turned out great, and I took my OW certification dives with a group of AOW students working on specialties. That was a bonus for me, b/c I ended up being included in the discussions about navigation, search/recovery, and night diving. I wasn't able to go deep diving with them, but I gained knowledge just listening to the dive plan.
So, I say, go for the private class. You will learn more and have more individualized attention. Plus, the class goes quicker since you won't have to wait on 6-8 other people to demo their skills. Have fun!

My LDS does not take more than 6 ppl in class, so I would say 5 should had been enough and instructor could had paired with someone.
I think more than 6 ppl in group would be too many and would not get enough attention in class.

Alright: The real story.

Apparently, two instructors were on a two week dive trip/vacation. Now I ask this: Why would they even have a course then if they knew it was their vacation week?

Anyway, it starts up April 22nd. I can't wait.

When I took my drysuit course, I saw how such large groups were in the pool for their OW.

I agree with Dannydon, private lessons is probably well worth it. My son is 11, and I signed him up with a private lesson. It didn't cost much more than what many agencies charged for their regular class, and I can assure that he gets the attention he needs. After OW, he'll be learning from me any how.

Update: I had my first class today. All paperwork and such, so pretty boring, but atleat it is starting!

I also got 4 one pound weights for my weight belt. Sweet. Haha.

I really lucked out. Taking my 2-weekend course at Scuba Quest in Sarasota, there werre originally 5 students registered. Three cancelled, but fortunately for me they waited until the day the course started to cancel, so Scuba Quest didn't cancel the class. For our classroom time and pool sessions this weekend, it was the instructor and two of us students. The other student did not "pass" the pool sessions, as she just couldn't master the skills, so the checkout dives next weekend will be one on one with my instructor. He said that since it's just the two of us we can go to West Palm Beach to take our Sunday boat dives, and that's great with me!
