If you are not familiar with the name "Captain Alfred Scott McLaren" just google it. This is a rare opportunity to hear about history as it was made from the man who made it.

Please join us on Sunday, February 20, at Tropical Acres Restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale when we are delighted to have the former President of the Explorers Club, Captain Alfred Scott McLaren, USN (Ret.), Ph.D., FE ’71 as our speaker. Captain McLaren, currently the President of The American Polar Society, will speak on the “THE EVOLUTION OF THE ARCTIC SUBMARINE: FOUR HUNDRED YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT, EXPLORATION, AND SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY.”

The Arctic Ocean is of great importance to the world's nations, scientifically, commercially, and politically. It is strategically important to the United States, Canada, and Russia, as a buffer zone among the polar nations. It is commercially important because of its vast resources, not the least of which, is oil. As the sea ice mantle deceases in response to global warming, the circumpolar nations vie for newly exposed resources by trying to increase their territorial limits. Recently, the study of polar ocean currents, sea ice, and surrounding land masses have made headlines because their interactions may hold the key to understanding the world's climate.

Dr. McLaren will trace the evolution of the Arctic submarine, the only vehicle capable of transporting humans to the Arctic Ocean at any time of the year and allowing researchers to work there for months at a time. He will briefly discuss the significant scientific and engineering insights and achievements since the 16th century that culminated in the development of the world's first true Arctic submarine, the nuclear-powered USS Nautilus (SSN-571). The presentation will highlight the exciting accomplishments including the first surfacing through ice at the North Pole, and the major submarine voyages of exploration that followed Nautilus's historic 1958 transpolar voyage.

We anticipate a large turn out so prepaid reservations are required for this exceptional presentation.

Our cash bar opens at 5:30 PM, dinner will be served at 6:30 PM with the lecture to follow. Charge for this event is $35.00 per person. Please reserve your spot by completing the enclosed form and returning it with your check payable to the Explorers Club to: Kris Stewart, Treasurer, 2214 S. Cypress Bend, #306, Pompano Beach, FL 33069.
