I (with my 60 dives) was a little embarrassed on a recent live-aboard when a friend of mine showed me that the inflator hose of my BCD (and most others apparently) are designed with a wire inside so that if you pull the hose downward (from the shoulder) the dump valve at the top end of the hose is activated. (I have an air 2 and this is also the case).
This is easier and as effective as raising the whole inflator hose and pressing the deflate button.
I suppose the point is 2-fold;
(1) In depth knowledge of your equipment is paramount (and reading the manual is a good place to start).
(2) There is always opportunity to learn something new.
I am glad you came away unscathed and that you have taken valuable lessons from the event. Probably worth at least a few dives worth of experience in one go.
Best Regards
Richard
