I have the FS-2 in the DSS wrist mount and like it a lot. Tilt tolerance is very impressive and it's a global needle. The compass card is a bit cluttered compared to an SK-7 but North is easily seen. The other lines and numbers on the compass card are sort of useless. The overall height in the DSS mount appears to be lower profile than the SK-7, I measure it at 25mm. I don't have an SK-7, my other compass is a Suunto SK-5 which I much prefer but the tilt tolerance is really poor and gets worse with depth.
The one killer feature of the FS-2 is the global needle which works the same in any compass zone. Were it not for that, there are other equally good compasses out there. The FS-2 has a "floating" magnet to make it global, and there could be some durability issues with the magnet coming loose from the card. That maybe what happened to the one you saw if it no longer points north.
